Job summary

The Surgical Division is looking for an experienced Nurse specialist to cover a 6 month Secondment period with potential of extension .

The CNS will be expected to work as a clinical nurse practioner working autonomously with shared case load caseloads of patients with Head, Neck and Thyroid cancer. This is a standalone post and the CNS should expect to assess patients for clinical signs of recurrence, order and carry out diagnostics within Nurse led oncology clinics following on from Treatment.

Main duties of the job

  1. To work autonomously with a delegated caseload of patients within the specialty. The CNS will be able assess patients, order diagnostics as appropriate and prescribe medication as necessary within scope of practice as per trust and NMC guidance
  2. The CNS will run autonomous advanced nurse practioner clinics for diagnostics, and clinical follow up
  3. The CNS will be responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care with due regard to the multi-professional setting and the total patient pathway
  4. The CNS will attend weekly Head and Neck MDT meetings and contribute to discussions about patient assessment, treatment planning and on-going car
  5. The CNS will assess patient for psychological and emotional distress using a recognised tool and if unable to support the patient refer on to Macmillian psychologist as needed.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse
  • Degree or equivalent
  • Teaching qualification
  • Head and Neck related qualification and/or Oncology qualification

Desirable

  • Masters degree or working towards

Experience

Essential

  • Experience as a Sister/Charge Nurse/ Specialist Nurse in acute healthcare
  • Minimum 3 years experience in Head and Neck related service specialty
  • Experience of development and leadership of change in clinical practice

Skills

  • High level communication skills written and verbal to be able to support patients and their families/ carers under highly challenging circumstances
  • The ability to develop and maintain communication with people on complex matters, issues and ideas and/or in complex situations
  • Organised good self management skills
