Job summary

The post holder will work as part of the Organisational Development (OD) and Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) team and the key strategic lead for EDI, whilst also working operationally to support colleagues and leaders from across the Group to embed EDI in all aspects of service delivery. You will be the organisational lead for the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED), associated action plans and a key influencer within our Health Inequalities work. You will lead a broad range of projects and developments as part of the Group's ambition to be an inclusive employer where staff are empowered to make a difference.

Main duties of the job

As a senior leader, you will work closely with the Head of OD and Inclusion and deputise where required. You will be adept at working with different internal and external stakeholder groups, supporting, advocating, and challenging others to make improvements in how our people work together. You will be a highly visible leader who will empower and support the staff voice for minority and/or groups of staff with protected characteristics, particularly with our Race, Equality and Cultural Heritage (REACH) staff.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Develops and takes the lead in advising on long-term strategic EDI business planning for the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire group
  • Formulate long term strategic plans, involving uncertainty, may impact on the whole of the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire
  • Provide the Group with expert advice and guidance on equality, diversity and inclusion related to workforce ensuring it is kept up to date on latest national, regional and local developments, legal and regulatory updates, highlighting the close link between good employment practices, service delivery and leadership.
  • Provides and receives highly complex, sensitive or contentious information and be able to summarise and present to large groups including Trust Board, Senior Leadership Teams and Group Briefings in order to develop appropriate workforce strategies
  • Be able to receive and present complex and sensitive information that has significant barriers to acceptance
  • Able to facilitate specialist training courses and/or give presentations on complex Equality, diversity and inclusion issues
  • Budget holder for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion across the Group
  • Able to commission external providers to deliver projects, ensuring they are fit for purpose and delivered on time and within budget
  • To lead the submission of annual returns, including Workforce Race Equality Standards (WRES), Workforce Disability Equality Standards (WDES) and Gender Pay Gap
  • Persuades up to board level senior managers of the importance of EDI, and the benefits of an EDI strategy to our organisation, our staff and patients. Engages key stakeholders including committees, working groups, senior leadership teams, managers, and staff groups
  • Receive highly complex information, facts or situations requiring analysis, interpretation, comparison of a range of options
  • Assesses and recommends courses of action on complex, specialist HR issues / analyses a range of very complex employment situations which require deciding on the way forward where no precedent exists or options conflict
  • Responsible for policy implementation and development of the Group EDI strategy, working with system, regional and national stakeholders that will impact across and beyond the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire
  • Develops policies for the Group, working jointly with other organisations to create a consistent approach; implements national policies and practices
  • Provide oversight and quality assurance for EDI analyses/impact assessments on all workforce policies and service redesign/reconfigurations - in line with legislation and HR policy review processes.
  • Work with the communications team to actively promote positive news stories related to EDI internally and externally.
  • Work in partnership with the Chairs of the staff networks to assist with the design and delivery of training programmes aimed at the Chairs of the Networks
  • Corporate responsibility for the EDI in the Group, including management of data and information systems, and line management of the two EDI Engagement Officers
  • Undertake audits, surveys and listening groups across both organisations, promoting staff voice
  • Interpret employment legislation and case law relevant to EDI, and provide authoritative advice on EDI issues to the senior leadership and HR colleagues
