Job summary

Applicants are invited for the post of Specialist in Critical care and Anaesthesia. The focus of the job plan is on ICU with sessions in anaesthesia for surgical lists.

The candidate will work autonomously to a level defined by mutual agreement within local clinical governance frameworks, and will be provided mentorship by both the Clinical Lead for Critical Care and Clinical Lead for Anaesthesia.

Main duties of the job

The primary focus will be on providing direct clinical care and meeting service delivery and improvement requirements. However, the role will be supported by the availability of suitable development opportunities (such as management, additional responsibilities, academia and research if required) for both service need and for the individual progression. The contract will be for 10-programmed activities (PAs). These activities will be split between direct clinical care (DCC) and supporting professional activities (SPA) as indicated below. The successful candidate will start with a provisional job plan prior to agreeing a final job plan, including personal and professional developmental objectives with the Clinical Lead/Clinical Director within 3 months of commencement. The SPA allocation will be 1.5 PAs per week and this allocation could increase as the post holder develops roles within the departments and becomes more involved in audit, teaching, management and governance activities.

The appointee will undertake an initial 3 -6 months (dependent on individual requirements) of supported practice and verification of competence in the role of a Specialist, with the expectation to take part as an independent practitioner eventually.

This is a fixed term post, initially for 6 months subject to further extension based on further assessment and mutual agreement.

About us

KGH is a tertiary cardiology centre for Northamptonshire providing PPCI service for the county. We regularly admit patients post PPCI, following OOHCA or in severe cardiogenic shock requiring Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump. We also have an interesting case mix from other medical specialties, haematology and post op surgical patients. The Unit has been an active participant in the ICNARC Case Mix Program and has achieved very consistent results with regard to key quality indicators for many years. The unit also received a "Good" rating in all 5 areas of the last CQC inspection. We pride ourselves on our caring approach, which is consistently reflected in our Friends and Family test results. We also run an ICU follow up clinic for patients who required level 3 care.
