Job summary

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic consultant for the post of Locum Consultant in Intensive care at Kettering General Hospital. CCT in Anaesthesia/ICM is desirable, however candidates who have previously worked in the UK as a Locum consultant in Intensive care or hold substantial experience with a clear track record of working as an independent practitioner in a Specialist role in the UK for at least 1 year and pursing CESR would also be considered. Candidates with Single CCT in ICM may also be eligible to apply.

This is a new post, advertised to cover the current vacancy and also to meet our objective to expand the critical care service in the future. The post is offered as a fixed term contract initially for 6 months, with possibility of extension for further a 6 months.

Main duties of the job

Exact job plan will be agreed on appointment. Typically, the ICU consultant job plan is an 8 weekly rolling job plan. ITU and on-call duties are delivered during the first five weeks. The remaining 3 weeks consists of an average of 5 theatre sessions which include various specialities including general surgery, trauma, orthopaedics, ENT, maxillo-facial surgery, urology, plastic surgery. The appointee is expected to offer some flexibility in these sessions although the theatre rota will generally be produced up to 6 weeks in advance, and it is normal practice to allocate appointees regular lists to allow for the development of team building, specific skill sets relating to areas of interest and ongoing working relationships.

Due to prospective on-call cover, leave is taken from non-ICU weeks and all on call must be covered prospectively. However, for example, it is not necessary for Week 2 and 3 to follow Week 1. As a rule, we aim to provide a rota planned for up to 6 months at a time to enable us to plan around your commitments outside work, but duty swaps are also permitted where overall DCC commitments are not affected. Any shortfall in DCC PAs will generally be made up by a degree of flexible working.

Provisional assessment of Programmed Activities for a whole-time contract of 10 PA split between DCC and SPA with 1PA on call allocation, plus a 5% category A on call intensity supplement.
