Job summary

Department for Transport Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) is essential.

Car driver (full licence holder) is essential.

Band 5 - Full Time (37.5 hours per week)

An opportunity has arisen for an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) to join our Team at North East Drive Mobility, providing assessment of driving, information and advice to people with disabilities on all aspects of car use. You will be required to work flexibly and travel between Walkergate Park, Centre for Neuro-rehabilitation and Neuro-psychiatry, Newcastle upon Tyne, and our outreach bases in Teesside and Carlisle.

Training in the role will be provided and it is a requirement for the successful candidate to complete the Driving Mobility Academy learning pathway.

The role is wide-ranging and offers the opportunity to develop and enhance your skills in this dynamic speciality. You will have a flexible approach and a genuine interest in the mobility needs of people with disabilities and older drivers.

Main duties of the job

North East Drive Mobility is a specialist area of Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear NHS Foundation Trust and we are looking for someone who is able to demonstrate excellent communication skills. You must have high level driving tuition skills and have the ability to utilise your knowledge to benefit the needs of drivers with complex physical and cognitive health conditions.

In conjunction with clinical team colleagues, you will be able to deliver critical recommendations to clients related to their driving ability. The post holder will also undertake specialist driving tuition for service users. Vehicles for the purpose of assessment and tuition are provided.

Essential

  • DVSA Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) Grade B (old Grade 4)
  • GCSE or equivalent level of study
  • Academic ability to complete the Driving Mobility Academy learning pathway

Desirable

  • Experience of driving instruction to people with disabilities and additional learning needs
  • DVSA Approved Driving Instructor Grade A (old grade 5-6)

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge of normal driver behaviour in order to identify driver performance
  • Knowledge of DVLA license requirements

Desirable

  • Knowledge and awareness of the physical and cognitive effects of disability and the impact this can have on safe driving.
  • Technical knowledge related to vehicles and vehicle adaptations.

Skills and Competencies

Essential

  • Excellent communication skills to effectively communicate with clients, carers other professionals and organisations.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team with the ability to be self directed in all aras of the post.
  • Ability to prepare written reports to a high standard in relation to client assessment and recommendations.
  • IT Skills, eg using computer for report writing, e mail, client data recording, internet search
  • Ability to deliver, in conjunction with team colleagues, unwelcome news.
