Job summary

This is a replacement post for a Consultant Psychiatrist in Medical Psychotherapy. The 10 PA post is based in the Centre for Specialist Psychological Therapies in Newcastle upon Tyne and the successful candidate will join a well-established and dynamic team.

They will support the Regional Department- a tertiary psychodynamic psychotherapy outpatient department and provide face-to-face assessments and psychotherapy psychodynamic treatments.

They will have a significant role in medical education with the supervision of trainees. Additionally, they will be part of the leadership team, contributing to strategic leadership within the department.

Main duties of the job

The duties of the post-holder will offer a stimulating combination of clinical, supervisory, reflective practice and leadership opportunities.

In regard to clinical duties, the post-holder will provide face to face psychotherapy assessments, individual or group psychodynamic treatments.

We would anticipate the post holder will provide a total of 16 hours per week of assessments and psychotherapy (individual/group) depending on service need, e.g. 8 hours of assessments and 8 hours of psychotherapy They will offer psychotherapy supervision to doctors and other professions, including higher and core trainees, and adult psychotherapists training with the Department. They will also offer reflective practice and other indirect psychoanalytic work to support and develop teams across the care pathway. This will include providing Balint groups and complex case discussions. The post-holder will be an active and supportive member of the multidisciplinary team, and a valued member within the leadership team.

Regular supervision for psychotherapy assessments and treatments will be supported

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification

Desirable

  • MRCPsych
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management (especially in a field related to psychotherapy)
  • External qualification registered with BPC or UKCP as a psychodynamic or psychoanalytic psychotherapist, or group analyst
  • Additional clinical qualifications, including psychotherapy qualifications in IPT, MBT or TFT

Eligibility

  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register as a Medical Psychotherapist OR within six months of gaining CCT. Specialism should be psychodynamic

  • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
