Job summary

We are looking for an experienced Clinical Psychologist with an interest in liaison psychiatry to provide specialist input into the Psychiatric Liaison Team for Northumberland and North Tyneside from mid-October. The team is well-established, with experienced mental health nurses and dedicated psychiatry input. The team provides timely biopsychosocial assessment and formulation to people presenting with a range of mental health needs to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital including self-harm, delirium and medically unexplained symptoms with the possibility of providing brief follow up for people with complex presentations.

Main duties of the job

The role is an integral part of the MDT, responsible for providing direct specialist psychological assessment, formulation and brief interventions with service users and families. The role involves supporting multidisciplinary staff to provide brief evidence-based psychological interventions as inpatient or short-term outpatient follow-up with service users, facilitating team formulation and reflective practice, and contributing to the multidisciplinary understanding of complex risks and the development of care plans.

The role provides specialist advice and training for multidisciplinary CNTW and Northumbria Healthcare colleagues on appropriate psychological models and interventions. The post also contributes to service development, service evaluation, research and audit to promote innovation and enhance the quality of care.

The Psychiatric Liaison Team provides assessment of mental health, and treatment of any mental health problems, to people attending a general hospital. Although we are employed by the mental health trust and not the general hospital, we work very closely with the general hospital team.

We are mental health professionals: specialist medical doctors (called 'psychiatrists'), registered mental health nurses, clinical psychologists, other specialist mental health professionals, and administrative staff.

We are a 24 hour service based at Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital (NSECH)

Essential

  • Doctoral level training in clinical/counselling psychology, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and Neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the HCPC and British Psychological Society
  • HCPC registered practitioner psychologist

Desirable

  • Qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Substantial post qualification experience of specialist psychological assessment, formulation and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings including outpatient, community, primary care, and inpatient settings.

Desirable

  • Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts.

Skills and Competencies

Essential

  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management.
  • Well developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinical sensitive information to clients, their family, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
