Job summary

This is an opportunity to join an experienced and well-established Universal Crisis Service which also provides crisis assessment and home treatment for young people experiencing acute mental health problems who can be managed in the community with intensive mental health support. The post will be supported by a Specialist Crisis Young Peoples' Team and you will join a skilled UCT multi-disciplinary workforce, including nurse consultants, non- medical prescribers, a pharmacist, specialist nurses, and a psychologist

As a medical leader in the Crisis service you will typically provide home-visit or OP reviews of new patients taken on for home treatment and, as part of the MDT, be responsible for reviewing their progress through its course . This will involve meeting with families, carers and other agencies to support their roles. You will also provide support and consultative advice to other clinicians in the service, supervision and support to trainees/ visiting medical students on an ad-hoc basis. Your role will involve liaison with GP's, schools, local authorities and other multi-agency staff, and community CYPS colleagues.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide psychiatric assessment, diagnosis and formulation to patients presenting with mental health crises from childhood to 18 yrs taken on for home-based treatment treatment with the Northumberland and North Tyneside Crisis Team or seen by the Psychiatric Liaison service.
  • To undertake S12 work in relation to Mental Health Act assessments for UCT patients
  • To provide (or ensure referral to the appropriate service for the provision of) up to date, evidence-based interventions for patients under the service's care.
  • To collaborate with GPs, Community Teams and primary care clinicians on follow-up arrangements for patients assessed or treated within the service.
  • To provide leadership, consultation, advice and guidance within the multi-disciplinary team, including for the Access and Triage components of the service.
  • To work collaboratively with colleagues in other specialist mental health teams and develop proactive links with the community services; particularly with a view to developing more robust pathways into appropriate follow-up care once discharged
  • To take a lead role with the Team/ Clinical Manager and other colleagues in service establishment, development and innovation/ improvement.
  • To contribute to the ongoing training and development programme within the team.
  • To train and supervise junior medical staff, medical students and other allied professions

  • To appraise and give professional supervision to junior medical staff, including assessing competences under appropriate frameworks.
  • To ensure that junior medical staff working with the post holder operate within the parameters of the New Deal and are Working Time Directive compliant.
  • To undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients.
  • To record clinical activity accurately and comprehensively, and submit this promptly to the Information Department.
  • To maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council, Mental Health Act Section 12(2) approval (if obtained), and to abide by professional codes of conduct.
  • To participate annually in a job plan review with the clinical manager, which will include consultation with a relevant manager in order to ensure that the post is developed to take into account changes in service configuration and delivery associated with modernisation.

You will join an experienced and established team consisting of a WAA and OA consultant psychiatrists as well as an MDT consisting of Nurse Consultant, Team and Service Manager, Clinical Leads (working age adult & CYPS) and band 6 nursing staff.
