Neuro-Rehab Out Patient Department, Walkergate Park
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced clinician to expand and develop clinical skills in Dystonia management, working within the Neuro-Rehab Outpatient Department at WGP.
The post holder will undertake assessment and treatment with botulinum toxin for patients presenting with complex symptoms resulting from dystonia and be a non-medical prescriber (or working towards non-medical prescriber status).
You will have a working knowledge of alternative treatments to managing dystonia, including pain and self-management and be able to signpost or carry out as required.
You will evaluate service needs to ensure, safe, effective delivery of care, leading on service development of the non-medical injector service for Dystonia, further developing evidence based assessments and outcome measures. Taking an active role in Research and Development, promoting evidence based practice.
You will lead on and facilitate education of staff, both internal and external to the unit, including presenting at local and national level.

Main duties of the job
To undertake assessment and treatment with botulinum toxin for patients presenting with complex symptoms resulting from their Dystonia including generalised Dystonia
To be a non-medical prescriber (or willingness to work towards)
To carry out botulinum toxin injections under U/S guidance as clinically indicated
To have a working knowledge of alternative treatments to managing dystonia and be able to signpost or carry out as required
To lead on developing the current non medical injector service for Dystonia, further developing evidence based assessments and outcome measures
To assess, advise and manage, pain and functional problems relating to the patients dystonia
To develop self management strategies for patients as an adjunct to their botulinum treatment
To take an active role in Research and Development, promoting evidence based practice within the Dystonia service
To lead on and facilitate education of staff within the Dystonia OP service and external to the unit , including presentations at a local and national level
To undertake service evaluation including audit promoting integrated governance agenda.
To support the Neuro-Rehab Outpatient Team Lead with the overall management of the department
To provide compassionate care that is based on empathy, kindness, respect and dignity
Demonstrate flexibility in the role, working across clinical pathways to meet service needs, whilst ensuring the delivery of high quality care
About us
The Neurological Services encompass outreach services and those based at WGP. There are 4 dedicated inpatient wards (neuro-rehabilitation, neuro-behavioural and neuro-psychiatry) providing 65 beds in total. There are also outpatient and community services consisting of Outpatient Spasticity and Dystonia Management; Regional Disability Team; Community Multiple Sclerosis Team; Community Neuropsychiatry Team; Regional Communication Aids Service; Environmental Control Service; North East Drive Mobility; Northumberland Head Injury Service; and Community Acquired Brain Injury Services based in Gateshead and Sunderland.
Within WGP we have an extensive Neuro-Rehabilitation Outpatient department providing community rehabilitation clinics for the management of spasticity, dystonia, multiple sclerosis, continence, sex and relationships for people with a long term neurological condition. In addition there are medical rehabilitation, orthotic, hand splinting and cognitive assessment clinics and a counselling service for people with a neurological condition.
