Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen in Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust's (CNTW) for the new and innovative role of a Peer Supporter to work with carers, working within the Sunderland South Community Treatment Team.

The Peer Supporter role is a vital part of our plan to continually improve the service that we provide. It offers a unique opportunity to work as part of a service that is committed to improving Carer and Family engagement.

The role is aimed at people with personal lived experience of caring for someone who has lived with mental health issues.

The successful candidate will offer their unique perspective to support the carers and families of our service users. You will be utilising your personal experience to create trusting relationships to support people in their caring role.

Main duties of the job

Your role will be to offer a different perspective and real understanding through:

  • Sharing experience as appropriate to find a mutual connection.
  • Support carers and families to be involved in care planning and treatment journeys.
  • Group work, as well as 1:1 work, using wellness plans and tools. You will co-develop therapeutic groups, dependant on your experience, working with a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Recording progress and concerns, working in a manner which ensures confidentiality and security.
  • Building confidence to enable carers to identify their own aspirations and goals.
  • Supporting the team to improve and inform the service in line with the service user and carer involvement strategy

The post will also involve contributing to the continuing development of the Peer Supporter role and working in partnership with third sector and recovery colleges.

This will be a challenging, but rewarding role, working with carers who suffer from dementia. The post holder must have the ability to communicate where there are barriers to understanding and they must be able to work as part of a team. They must be confident in working and communicating with people and demonstrate strong recovery values in relation to inspiring hope and empowerment in others.
