Job summary
Preceptorship Midwife Band 5/6 at the West Cumberland Hospital. 24hrs per week fixed term for 6 months
The banding will depend on experience
Provide specialist expertise to offer women safe and evidence based choices in labour, promoting a normal birth experience. Assess the full range of care needs, develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care throughout the antenatal, intra-partum and postnatal period for women and their babies. Work as an integral part of the multi-disciplinary team providing care to women throughout the antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum continuum.
You will undertake the Maternity department rotational preceptorship programme and an expectation to enter the community on call service.
Provision of a full range of care to low and high risk women and their families throughout the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal continuum within a hospital setting. Development of evidence based guidelines and policies, incorporating NICE guidelines to ensure safe clinical practice and equity throughout the Trust for the maternity services. Ensure clinical risk measures are in place and develop and improve maternity services involving all care provision within the department and community, working towards attaining the next level of CNST. Improvement and development of the service, initiating and undertaking audit and research; working in partnership with users of the service through the labour ward forum to improve services.
Main duties of the job
- Develop specialised evidence based programmes of care for the majority of women throughout pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period, working independently without referral to medical staff, adhering to agreed local and national clinical policies and code of practice.
- Provide specialist advice to women & families in relation to pregnancy, labour and postnatal period, utilising interpersonal skills.
- Perform normal delivery of babies and maintain extended skills e.g. episiotomy, perineal suturing, IV cannulation, vaginal examination.
- Deal with emergency situations that occur which can be life threatening.
- Arrange for appropriate investigations to be undertaken, interpret and act on these accordingly.
- Competently interpret CTG tracing, referring to more experienced staff where appropriate.
- Competently initiate neonatal resuscitation, referring appropriately if necessary.
- Attend theatre for caesarean sections and assist appropriately
- Order, assess and safely administer medicines, including controlled drugs, in accordance with NMC guidelines and local policy.
- Act as an advocate for woman at all times.
- Act in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct (NMC).
- Safeguard and promote the welfare of children at an individual level.
- Participate in emergency skill drills to familiarise in prompt action/treatment in emergency situations.
- Comply with infection control procedures at all time
