The Trust will provide a twelve month preceptorship period for New to registration Nurses Midwives and Allied Health Professionals.

Disclosure and Barring Service:

On 28 November 2020, the new Disclosure and Barring Service filtering rules will come into effect.

The changes mean that:

• youth cautions, reprimands and final warnings will no longer be subject to automatic disclosure

Qualifications

Essential

• Degree or equivalent qualification in Speech and Language Therapy approved by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT).
• Registration with HCPC.
• Ongoing Membership with the RCSLT.
• Evidence of formal training / self-study / specialist experience to post graduate level in dysphagia
• Experience of organising, managing and prioritising a clinical caseload.
• Experience of working as part of a team
• Experience of working with other professionals and agencies
• Experience of dysphagia assessment and management

Desirable

• Experience of working with adults with a wide range of communication and swallowing disorders.
• Experience of working in a wide range of settings including acute hospitals, community hospitals, clinics and patients

Knowledge

Essential

• RCSLT code of conduct and professional standards
• Knowledge of departmental and national policies/procedures relating to SLT practice
• Knowledge of a wide variety of speech, language and communication disorders
• To demonstrate a breadth of specialist knowledge with decision making underpinned by current evidence based practice, where many decisions will have significant implications
• Knowledge of current clinical procedures
• Current assessment, diagnosis and treatment approaches for relevant client groups - specifically patients with dysphagia.
• Prognostic indicators for relevant client groups
• Access routes to assessment procedures relevant to SLT management, carried out in conjunction with or by other services, e.g. X rays, hearing tests
• Treatment/surgical procedures/medical management carried out by other services, relevant to SLT management e.g. PEG/NG feeding, drug therapies
• Clinical governance as it affects clinical practice, e.g. policies relating to record keeping and confidentiality in line with local trust and professional body guidelines
• Knowledge of national guidelines for stroke and the implications of this for SLT

Skills and Aptitude

Essential

• Ability to carry out and analyse results of various assessments appropriate for different clients, relating to age, disorder, standardisation, etc.
• IT ability, including word processing, presentation skills and ability to access software packages
• Negotiation and problem solving ability, in order to prioritise and strategise for assessment and intervention
• Skills in motivation of clients and/or carers to engage in the therapeutic process
• Highly developed auditory and perceptual skills in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of clients
• Willingness to learn and be a reflective practitioner
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Excellent time management, organisational and administration skills.

Personal circumstances

Essential

• Full driving licence or able to travel independently of public transport.
• Ability to stand, sit and walk, and use occasional light effort. Occasional moderate effort for short periods
