Job summary

North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust is welcoming applicants to join an enthusiastic team in the acute paediatric department which forms a part of county-wide paediatric services in Cumbria alongside community paediatric and specialist services. Main duties of the job

Trust Registrars work alongside Paediatric Consultants and junior trainees in a rota that includes day and night shifts and is fully EWTD compliant. The applicant's primary responsibility is to provide Tier 2 (middle-grade) support in the Assessment of Children referred to the SSPAU as well as providing inpatient care for those requiring inpatient admissions.

Job responsibilities

Consultants, Middle Grade Doctors, Junior Trainees and Nurse Practitioners all provide direct clinical care for children referred to hospital. For Middle Grade this involves resident shifts incl. weekends. Access to immediate consultant advice and support is available 24 hrs a day 7 days a week.

General Responsibilities include:

  • The assessment and management of acute paediatric patients presenting to the unit for assessment and/or admission.
  • The provision of experienced paediatric support to the emergency department and resuscitation area, when required. This includes attendance to the resuscitation bay.
  • The provision of advanced neonatal resuscitation cover to the Consultant-led maternity unit.
  • Middle grade paediatric cover of a level 1 SCBU, Transitional Care and Postnatal ward.
  • Supervision of Junior Staff and PNPs
  • Supporting junior doctors to maintain high standards of communication by attending handover and supporting discharge process
  • General Paediatric outpatient clinics - 2 Clinics every 6 weeks
  • Participation in teaching of Junior doctors and nursing staff

Middle Grade Doctors are supported to participate in research and educational activities as part of their professional development. The development of speciality interests will actively be encouraged by the department and can be supported by either the special interests of the consultants within the unit or our visiting tertiary consultants.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBChB or equivalent, EPLS or APLS/NLS or other accredited life support course.

Desirable

  • MRCPCH part 2 written and clinical.
  • MRCPCH Part 1 or equivalent Level 2 Child Protection

Experience

Essential

  • Minimum 2 years paediatric experience
  • Capable of providing out of hours middle grade cover to the Paediatric/Neonatal Unit
  • Practical experience in resuscitation and stabilisation of premature babies

Desirable

  • Minimum 1 year in multidisciplinary environment equivalent to United Kingdom paediatric experience and achieved all the competencies of an ST2-3 doctor.
  • Broad general paediatric and neonatal experience.
  • Experience in child protection
  • Experience in research. GCP training.

  • Full GMC registration and a licence to practice (or eligibility to apply for by proposed start date)
