Pathology Reception Medical Laboratory Assistant
Full time - 37.5 hours
Mon-Fri 9-5pm and 1 in 4 Saturday mornings for time off in lieu.
Applications are invited from a suitable enthusiastic individual to work as part of a small team in pathology reception at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle. The successful candidate will undertake a range of duties including:-
- Welcoming patients and visitors to the pathology department
- Handling telephone enquiries
- Receiving, un-packaging, sorting and distributing blood and other samples to the relevant laboratories
- Maintain General Pathology stock consumable levels; identify, order and store supplies and equipment.
- Collating printed laboratory reports and preparing them for posting
Main duties of the job
The post holder will become a member of an established team, contributing to the efficient flow of work through the department by carrying out essential sample reception checks and ensuring timely despatch of laboratory reports. Medical Laboratory Assistants in pathology reception are often the first point of contact with the department and as such require basic customer service skills. Working in a busy healthcare science environment requires attention to detail, accuracy and concentration. The ability to respond to competing demands and prioritise workload are essential characteristics of Medical Laboratory Assistants in pathology reception.
Previous laboratory experience is not essential as training will be provided after which time you would be expected to participate in a rota for weekend. You should be able to demonstrate good planning, organisational and interpersonal skills as well as evidence of competence in problem solving and prioritising workloads. Excellent communication skills are essential for this post.
