Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a permanent Band 6 Dietitian to work within the acute team at The Cumberland Infirmary, North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust. The post-holder will work within the Gastroenterology, ICU and Surgical multi-disciplinary teams providing a clinical service to inpatients at The Cumberland Infirmary. There will be opportunities for service improvement within the speciality.

We are looking for a motivated, enthusiastic Dietitian with excellent communication and team working skills. Experience of enteral and parenteral feeding and working within a multi-disciplinary team. In addition to clinical work, you would be expected to provide nutritional education to other health care professionals.

Supporting the professional development of the band 5 Dietitians and Dietetic Assistants within the department by providing supervision sessions and learning opportunities as required.

Professional development is given a high priority and there are ongoing educational opportunities as well as practice supervision. The department trains student dietitians on P1, P2 and P3 placements from universities across the North of England. IT and secretarial support is available.

You will join an established team of 19 dietitians and 2 dietetic assistants (acute, community & paediatrics).

Main duties of the job

Clinical

  • Communicate and deliver information on a wide range of dietary needs, using motivational interviewing techniques, cognitive behaviour therapy, empathy and reassurance skills as appropriate
  • Provide dietary advice to patients in hospital
  • Translate technical medical language into a format that can be understood by the patient
  • Give expert clinical judgement on the treatment options and care plans for the patient, discussing with medical staff any changes to medication that may be required
  • Liaise with healthcare professionals, patients, families and carers as appropriate
  • Provide verbal and written dietary advice and support in a format that is appropriate to the patient's understanding
  • Write care pathways for patients, involving other health professionals as required
  • Prioritise workload and manage time schedules appropriately
  • Comply with infection control procedures at all times
