Job summary

This post is for a Highly Specialist Clinical Psychologist to join the Adolescent and Young Adult Service (AYAS), based at the Tavistock Centre.

The post holder will provide a specialist psychological assessment and psychoanalytic psychotherapy service to adolescents and young adults (aged 14-30) and offer advice and consultation to parents/carers and colleagues as appropriate. They will also act as coordinator for the AYAS clinical psychology (DClinPsy) training placements and take a leadership role in developing an area of clinical practice within the service, and in service-related research projects.

Main duties of the job

1. The post holder will hold their own complex caseload within the team including responsibilities for risk management and clinical governance, planning and prioritising these2. Undertake clinical assessments of service users/patients and offer highly skilled treatment or therapy within a psychoanalytic framework.3. Work with team manager on intake and referral coordination4. Provide consultation to external agencies as required such as GPs/schools/Local authorities5. Review cases where patients have impasses, complaints, or disputes with their clinical care6. Delegated responsibility for investigating complaints and processing Freedom of Information requests7. To ensure, where appropriate, agreed standardised assessment questionnaires are completed with clients as per team protocol and to systematically collect data on caseload as required by the team manager8. Formulate specialised plans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of a service user/patient's psycho-social difficulties taking into account multiple theoretical and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy9. Arrange reviews and communicate sensitively and effectively with patient/service users to monitor progress during the course of multi- disciplinary interventions

About us

The Adolescent and Young Adult Service

We are a specialist Psychoanalytic Therapies Service for young people between the ages of 14 and 25, designed to meet a variety of needs specific to adolescents and young adults who are struggling with mental health issues and their parents and families. This service represents a long history and established tradition at the Tavistock Centre, spanning over 50 years, of offering a service to adolescents and young adults during this crucial phase of development. The AYAS is staffed by a multi-disciplinary team with expertise in the psychological and emotional difficulties of this age range. The Service includes child & adolescent psychotherapists, child and adolescent psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, social workers, and those training in these disciplines.

The AYAS aims to offer a flexible and accessible service, offering a range of interventions, including brief work (DIT, 16 sessions), time limited (STTP up to 28 sessions) and longer term psychotherapy for both individuals as well as group psychotherapy. The Service also provides therapeutic support and consultation to parents and families of adolescents and young adults, where this is more appropriate and when it can support the young person's therapy.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • Degree level as a minimum plus developed specialist and practical knowledge equating to postgraduate Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy).
  • Appropriate registration with the UK HCPC.
  • Eligible for registration as a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society.
  • Completion of further post-doctoral post-qualification specialist training in psychodynamic/psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

Desirable

  • Qualified to supervise and/or practice Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT)

CLINCIAL EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Evidence of clinical experience of working with Adolescent and Young Adult population (across ages 14-30) within a psychodynamic framework.
  • Experience of supervising clinical psychology trainees, sufficient to be able to co-ordinate the setting up and management of clinical psychology placements for the service.
  • A clear track record of managing complexity and risk whilst maintaining high standards of service delivery
  • Experience of working at all levels of the system with internal and external stakeholders

Desirable

  • Some experience of clinical management of staff
