Consultant Psychiatrist

Job summary

This is an established 5 PA post working in the Camden CAMHS Whole Family Team (WFT) Over 5s. There are 2 Whole Family Teams, one for over 5s (approx. 9.5 WTE) and a team for under 5s (approx. 10.5 WTE). This consultant role is with the over 5's team. The consultant in the under 5s Team has 2 PAs and works closely with postholder.

The teams are multidisciplinary with psychology, nursing, social work, family therapy and child psychotherapy. The team provides a service for a disadvantaged and hard to reach population who are receiving services from Camden Safeguarding and CIN Social Work Teams, Early Help, YOS, and a range of Specialist Education provisions including the PRU. There is a separate CAMHS team for Children Looked After.

The consultant role in this service is to support the team with their assessments and interventions and provide support and clinical leadership with diagnostic challenges and with complex multi-agency cases, and to maintain effective relationships with other teams and services. For this population responsiveness and flexibility is key. Some work is clinic based but most is in the community alongside colleagues from other agencies.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is not based in any particular setting, but does most frequently help with complex Social Services cases, and joins colleagues when psychiatric assessment is needed across any part of the service.

The case load is approximately 30 cases at any one time, a mixture of consultation, assessment and treatment, including psychopharmacology for hard to reach children with neuropsychiatric disorders. The use of the Mental Health Act is rare (1 case every 2 years) but the post holder is expected to maintain S12 approval.

There is a strong clinically led culture of being flexible about how the service is delivered, using the CAMHS Thrive needs based approach rather than criteria for referrals. The post holder, as part of the senior leadership of the team, is a crucial person in maintaining the clinical culture.

About us

The Whole Family Service is a multidisciplinary CAMH service of approximately 20 Whole Time equivalent staff, integrated with Local Authority Children's Services. While there are co-located CAMHS clinicians in many Local Authority Children's Services, particularly in Children Looked After teams and Youth Offending Teams, there is no-where in England that we are aware of that has a co-located CAMHS offer on this scale.

For operational purposes the service is split into the Whole Family Team for over 5s, and the Whole Family Team for under 5s.

CAMHS practitioners are placed in Family Hubs, the Social Emotional Mental Health Education Provision, Early Help Teams, Social Work Safeguarding and Child in Need Teams, and Youth Justice Services and are part of one team who meet for clinical discussions on a regular basis and sit together for parts of the week.

Clinicians provide direct assessment and treatment for children young people and families that are referred into the service. The remit of the service is to work with vulnerable families who are receiving Local Authority Services where it is thought that CAMHS, working alongside practitioners in other agencies, was the most effective way of providing a mental health service to a child or young person
