The Portman Clinic is a NHS England commissioned national specialist outpatient clinic offering psychoanalytically orientated assessment, treatment and management for children, adolescents and adults who suffer from problematic sexual behaviours or engage in delinquent, criminal or violent behaviour. Treatment offered is individual, group and couple therapy. The aim of the Portman Clinic is to develop a body of knowledge on criminality, sexual deviancy and violence through its clinical work and to disseminate this expertise through consultancy, teaching and training, research and publication.
The Research Assistant/Assistant Psychologist plays a central role within the Portman Clinic, holding several functions that span the domains of clinical activity, audit, clinical governance, research and quality improvement.

Main duties of the post
The post is equally split between the duties of research assistant operationally responsible to the Portman Clinics research lead, and the duties of assistant psychologist operationally responsible to the Portman Clinics clinical governance lead
Research assistant
- To undertake the role of research assistant at the Portman Clinic on the Portman Clinic Service Evaluation and Routine Outcome Monitoring (OM) and Research Project
- To be involved with the collection, organisation and entry of research data as part of the clinics OM system and service evaluation
- To carry out clinical, diagnostic research interviews, including the depression (HRSD) interview, personality disorder assessment (SCID for DSM 5) and a qualitative interview with both patients and clinicians
- To assist with data management and analysis (using Excel, SPSS and STATA)
- To assist in the management of literature databases (using Endnote software)
- To assist on an ad hoc basis on other satellite research projects carried out at the Portman Clinic
- To communicate effectively with multidisciplinary colleagues both in writing and verbally about research activity as required
- To present findings to colleagues or multidisciplinary groups as required and to assist the write up for publication
- To work closely with, and receive supervision from, the research lead of the Portman clinic
- To prioritise own workload, seeking guidance from, and accepting the advice of, the research lead of the Portman Clinic
Assistant psychologist
- To undertake the role of research assistant on audit and quality improvement projects for which the service is responsible
- To be responsible for data collection and input in conjunction with the data quality team
- To perform analysis of quantitative and qualitative data
- To assist the clinical governance lead and Portman director in producing relevant reports, for example, reporting activity and bids for external funding
- To support training initiatives within the service through the collection of information as required and assisting with the preparation of teaching and training materials
- To communicate effectively with multidisciplinary colleagues both in writing and verbally about audit and quality improvement activity as required
- To present findings to colleagues or multidisciplinary groups as required and to write up for publication
- To work closely with, and receive supervision from the clinical governance lead and senior clinicians of the service
- To prioritise own workload, seeking guidance from, and accepting the advice of, the clinical governance lead or other senior clinicians
- To attend specified meetings within and outside the trust and take minutes or notes as required
