Job summary
We are seeking an experienced, compassionate and motivated midwife to join the Royal London Hospital as a Fetal Wellbeing Midwife (Band 7) on a part-time, fixed-term basis.
This specialist role provides expert clinical leadership in fetal wellbeing and fetal monitoring, supporting safe, evidence-based and equitable care for women and birthing people. The postholder will work closely with midwifery, obstetric, neonatal, governance and education teams to strengthen CTG interpretation, promote timely escalation, and enhance learning from incidents in line with national guidance.
We are committed to compassionate, inclusive and values-based care. Applications are welcomed from candidates of all backgrounds, and we actively support flexible working, reasonable adjustments and professional development.
Main duties of the job
The Fetal Wellbeing Midwife will provide expert leadership and support in all aspects of fetal monitoring, with a strong focus on clinical practice, staff competence, quality assurance, and governance. The role includes offering expert clinical input for CTG interpretation and fetal wellbeing assessment across intrapartum areas, acting as a senior point of escalation for complex or concerning CTG patterns, and ensuring timely multidisciplinary review and decision-making. The post-holder will support the ongoing implementation of Trust fetal monitoring standards, including the Royal London hourly CTG assessment process and "fresh eyes" reviews. A key aspect of the role involves promoting physiological interpretation of CTGs alongside NICE categorisation, taking into account the clinical context and stage of labour.
The Fetal Wellbeing Midwife will lead and contribute to mandatory fetal monitoring training and annual competency assessments for both midwifery and medical staff. They will identify colleagues requiring additional support, coordinating targeted remediation, supervision, and follow-up where needed. The role also includes contributing to audit, quality improvement initiatives, incident reviews, and learning responses where fetal monitoring has been a factor, as well as supporting wider assurance reporting through governance structures.
