Job summary
The Band 7 Sonographer position at Newham University Hospital is a diverse and dynamic role within one of London's largest ultrasound departments. The post holder should demonstrate an ability to perform a range of diagnostic ultrasound examinations including obstetrics, gynaecology, musculoskeletal, abdominal, paediatrics, head and neck and vascular imaging. The position has a vital role in providing high level patient care and diagnostics, across a 7 day service with 12-hour operating days, which will directly impact patient treatment.
Our Sonographers undertake clinical work within established quality standards of practice, adhering to Ultrasound guidelines such as those published by BMUS, RCOG, RCR and NICE. The post-holder will work within departmental protocols as a practitioner in the delivery of all ultrasound imaging, reporting and management of the patient.
The postholder will also be responsible for contributing to ongoing research, teaching and audits. Collaborative working across multi-disciplinary teams and across the wider Imaging department will be fundamental. Professional development and development of additional technical diagnostic skills is highly promoted through our internal Barts Health Trust-wide education and preceptorship programme. Postholders will be encouraged to utilise their regular CPD sessions to promote further learning and development.
Main duties of the job

Communication:Effectively communicate with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams. Provide results, deliver sensitive information, and manage initial complaints professionally.

Clinical Practice:Independently perform a wide range of ultrasound examinations (e.g. obstetrics, gynaecology, abdominal), assess referrals, and ensure high standards of patient care and safety.

Organisational Responsibilities:Prioritise and manage daily workload, support service delivery across multiple sites, and ensure smooth operational flow, including lone working where necessary.

Training & Supervision:Supervise and train students, and healthcare professionals. Contribute to education and development through structured assessments and mentorship.

Professional Development:Maintain CPD, participate in appraisal and development plans, and attend mandatory and specialist training to uphold clinical standards.

Governance & Quality:Ensure accurate documentation, equipment care, adherence to infection control and health & safety guidelines. Participate in audits and service improvements.

Policy & Compliance:Follow Trust policies on equality, confidentiality, data protection, and work flexibly across the Trust to meet service needs.
