Consultant Cardiologist with an interest in Heart Failure & General Cardiology

Barts Health NHS Trust invites applications to join the Cardiology team at Whipps Cross Hospital (WXH) as a Consultant Cardiologist with an interest in heart failure and General Cardiology. This post, 10 PAs, appointment is to support the implementation of a consultant of the week model of inpatient care, to increase local expertise in heart failure and General Cardiology, and to reduce outpatient waiting times.

Whipps Cross has been part of Bart's Health since 2012 and is a 700 bedded district general hospital with a 70 bedded acute admissions unit and accident and emergency department. There is a full range of medical and surgical specialities on site including emergency surgery and a general ITU. Cardiology provides in-patient and outpatient care, including a full range of physiological assessments and a community based service.

In-patient care is provided on a dedicated cardiac ward (18 beds, including 8 monitored CCU beds). In addition, the cardiology team provides an in-patient consultation service to other specialities.

Main duties of the job

The outpatient clinical activity is Consultant led with both general and speciality clinics undertaken. Clinics are undertaken on the Byron Cardiology Unit at Whipps Cross. Specialist nurses undertake Rapid Access Chest pain Clinic (RACPC) assessment, Heart Failure clinics, arrhythmia clinics and rehabilitation clinics. The nurse led clinics are supervised remotely by Consultants. Local specialist cardiology services include: arrhythmia OPD service including cardioversion, Hospital and community based Nurse Lead heart failure service, Pacemaker Follow up clinic and Cardiac Rehabilitation.

The cardiology department is also actively involved in teaching. Undergraduate third year, fifth year and special study module QMUL/Barts medical students undertake placements at WXH. Overseas medical students from St Matthews University are also placed. The department also caters for work experience students.
