An exciting, 12 month fixed term contract opportunity has come up within the East and South East London (ESEL) Pathology Network, for an enthusiastic Specialist Transfusion Practitioner who shares our vision of a high-quality transfusion service, and invite applications from suitably qualified and experienced Nurses, Biomedical Scientists Band 7 level, or a Band 6 already fulfilling a TP role or keen to move their career in that direction.
The successful candidate for the role of Specialist Transfusion Practitioner must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to organise and motivate staff. The appointee will assist the Lead TP and other members of the Blood Transfusion management team in providing a comprehensive, cost effective, and high-quality Blood Transfusion service to the Trust. The appointee will represent Blood Transfusion for the Homerton Trust, ESEL Pathology Partnership and external meetings as required and will contribute to service improvement as well as facilitating delivery of current service provision across the Trust.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will also work with the Hospital Transfusion Committee to ensure the appropriate use of blood, blood components, and alternatives to transfusion. The post-holder will be providing a link between the Transfusion Laboratory and the clinical interface and will be delivering training and competency assessment packages for the Transfusion process to any Trust employee involved in the transfusion process.
The Specialist Transfusion Practitioner will be expected to regularly audit transfusion processes, re-design where necessary, aiming for continuous improvement. You will become a champion of best practice ensuring the Transfusion processes meet the Blood Safety & quality legislation and other regulatory bodies.
The successful candidate will be provided training on investigation of clinical Transfusion errors and adverse events, implementing effective corrective and preventative actions to improve safety and quality.
This role is offered on a fixed term contract for 12 months.

The NHS East andSouth EastLondon Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.
The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites.
Pathology is made up of the following services - Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry; Infectious Diseases including Microbiology and Virology; Cellular Pathology including Histopathology, non-gynae Cytology and mortuary services; Immunology; Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology; Immunophenotyping; Clinical Transplantation and Retinoblastoma.
The 2020/21 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. £126m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa. 822 WTE.
