Ophthalmic Technician Band 3:

We are looking for a friendly, enthusiastic, and hard-working person to work in our ophthalmology outpatient unit. You must be an excellent communicator as you will have everyday contact with multi-professional colleagues where results and positive achievements will be crucial. Exceptional personal and organisational qualities are key attributes in this role. The ability to supervise and coach staff will also be necessary, as will a focus to delivering the highest standards of care and service to our patients.

As part of the recruitment process for this post, candidates will be required to complete an online literacy and numeracy test and only if they pass this, will they be invited to a formal interview.

Main duties of the job

  • To work as part of a multi disciplinary team to deliver a high standard of evidence based practice as directed by nursing staff and Medical Staff.
  • To ensure high quality patient care is delivered and take appropriate steps if this is not the case
  • To assist in the maintenance of a health and hygienic environment.
  • To contribute in the assessment of patients attending the Ophthalmic department at Whipps Cross Hospital
  • To work without direct supervision to provide a high quality technical service which includes diagnostic testing and imaging for both adults and children across a variety of sub-specialities under direct supervision of mangers, senior sister, senior nurses and clinical leads.
  • To have the ability to work autonomously as well as working closely with members of the multi-disciplinary teams
  • To work within standard operating procedures, departmental guidelines and protocols, usually without direct supervision
  • To work within a variety of ophthalmology clinics to meet the needs of the service
  • To provide a variety of diagnostic tests following training and achievement of competences. The tests required will include assessment of visual acuity, ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT) both posterior and anterior, Pentacam, Auto-refraction, Digital Retinal Imaging, HRT and Visual Field Assessment, Biometry, ECG, Cannulation/Venepunture and focimetry.
