Job summary

All sites: Royal London hospital, Newham University and Whipps Cross University Hospitals

Salary: According to national pay scales, (Banding supplement applies). As this is a CT1/CT2 level Trust Grade post, NHS pay banding will reflect this level of experience.

We currently require a number of enthusiastic doctors (ST1,ST2 level SHOs) to join our departments to start in the rotations October 2024 intake.

The Trust will fund successful candidates (for the SHO rotation) to complete a distance learning MSc in Trauma Sciences degree at QMUL. Sucessful candidates will be required to apply as soon as possible for places on the MSc Course. If successful at interview for the SHO rotataion the Trust will pay the university degree fees in exchange for 24 months service.*

The surgical rotation posts include positions in several departments across the Emergency Care and Trauma and Surgery Divisions (final speciality slots will be confirmed prior to starting at the trust and are allocated on a 6 monthly basis), which offers the opportunity to work across all the Barts Health sites providing excellent variety and opportunities for learning. The post will provide ideal opportunities to enhance the portfolio of the successful candidate and assist in the career progression of SHOs persuing a career in Trauma and Orthopaedics, as well as the chance to connect and work with consultants across all the Barts Health sites.

Main duties of the job

The rotation posts are not recognised for post-graduate training but will provide the same educational opportunities, and successful candidates are expected to fully participate in the well-established postgraduate training program to continue their personal and professional development.

The experience gained in the rotation would be extremely useful for candidates wishing to pursue a career in Trauma & Orthopaedics. The hub and majority of the rotational placements will be at The Royal London Trauma Centre site and Trauma and Orthopaedics.

Contribution to emergency orthopaedic and trauma 'on call' service. You will liaise and work with the registrar on-call to clerk, admit patients from A&E, and take referrals from GP's. You will have support and supervision from the on-call Registrar and the on-call Consultant.

The on call rote is a split shift of nights. The Rota is a 1 in 9, 8 am - 8 pm and 20:00-09:00. This system is European Working Time Directive compliant.

Continuous care of orthopaedic in-patients, the post holder must work flexibly with your colleagues and share the workload. This includes cross covering for colleagues who are on nights, zero hour days or on leave.

Participation in ward activities and regular ward rounds with the appropriate Consultant. It is desirable to attend the elective outpatient clinics, fracture clinics and theatre session whenever possible and training days are included in the Rota for this activity to be supernumery.
