Job summary

This is an exciting new role in the surgery team based at the Royal London Hospital. The role would entail working with the service to ensure complex, high risk patients who are due to come into having high-risk surgery have their medication history recorded and assessed appropriately in the pre-operative assessment clinic, and are then looked after in the Surgical High Dependency Unit. The postholder would also support in providing specialist pharmacist support to the junior pharmacists rotating through the general surgery wards. The role would involve working with the key stakeholders to develop and expand the pre-operative assessment service.

The postholder would also promote the responsible, safe, and cost-effective prescribing of medicines within the Surgical High Dependency Unit to optimise clinical outcomes, minimise adverse reactions and improve medicines safety and antimicrobial stewardship. The postholder would be expected to be an integral part of the multidisciplinary team in the primary areas that they work in, and support the Highly Specialist Pharmacist, Surgery (RLH) in leading a team in the delivery of a high quality clinical, professional, and operational pharmacy service to all areas.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will carry out the full range of duties as a Specialist Pharmacist in Surgery to deliver patient focused, quality care, based primarily at the Royal London Hospital. Their primary role will be to look after the Surgical High Dependency Unit (HDU), provide specialist pharmacist input into the pre-operative assessment clinic as well as providing specialist clinical support to the surgical wards. There will be elements of Critical Care training provided as HDU will be covered.

To promote the responsible, safe and cost-effective prescribing of medicines within surgery, peri-operative care and pain in order to optimise clinical outcomes, minimise adverse reactions and improve medicines safety. The post holder will be supporting the Highly Specialist Pharmacist, Surgery in leading a team of staff in the delivery of high quality clinical, professional and technical pharmacy service to the speciality.
