Job summary

We are excited to advertise this new psychology post. The post-holder, in collaboration with a range of MDT colleagues, will support improvements to service delivery within community services for adults people who are undergoing treatment in relation to sickle cell disease within North East London (NEL).

This post is part of a project funded by NHS England for a period of two years, with the aim of developing 'end-to-end' pathway support for people living with sickle cell disease, to ensure the needs of sickle cell disease patients are being met.

Sickle cell is one of the most common of the 'rare' blood disorders and disproportionately affects people from Black African and Caribbean populations.

The focus will be on improving service provision and psychological services to this underserved population, with a concentration on community settings. Key to improving service delivery will be service user involvement, as well as working in collaboration with existing service providers to ensure effective pathways.

We are looking for a Clinical psychologist who is passionate about tackling health inequalities and improving access to care for those who are least well served by health services, and who has experience in working with patients with chronic health conditions.

Main duties of the job

To improve care quality and patient experience for patients with sickle cell disease and to develop understanding of psychological needs for adults with sickle cell and develop appropriate care pathways.

To improve clinical outcomes for patients, for example to access medical support in a timely way, support to manage the emotional consequences of living with sickle cell disorder and improved pain management.

To achieve greater consistency in provision of psychological support across NEL, in line with evidence based/best practice guidance.

Collaboration with partners from across existing services, to enhance pathways, including transition pathways from child to adult services.

Consultation, liaison, and training to other staff across pathways, to enhance psychological understanding and skills of other professionals seen by the patient and liaison with other services in the adult's network and agencies to improve understanding of sickle cell and support for adults.

Supporting the addressing of health inequalities, ensuring all adults benefit from psychological approaches by identifying underlying psychological factors and linking with accessible, effective community psychological support programmes.

To support the establishment of permanent funding for psychology provision.

In addition to joining the Haematology service, the post will be supported by the adult liaison team, a multidisciplinary team supporting the psychological well-being of adults.
