Job summary
This is a unique and exciting opportunity to join the Executive team at the Royal London and Mile End Hospitals and really make a positive difference to the lives of East Londoners.
The Royal London Hospital is an internationally renowned teaching hospital one of London's leading trauma and emergency care and hyper-acute stroke centres. Our hospital is home to a major specialised internal medicine programme, one of the largest children's hospitals in the UK, a tertiary maternity centre, and evolving complex surgical centres in abdominal and head & neck cancer. We are the district general hospital for Tower Hamlets, one of the most diverse and deprived Boroughs in England, but also home to Canary Wharf and the City of London fringes - as such we are key partners within our Place, Tower Hamlets Together. At our Mile End Hospital site, we are focusing on a range of outpatient inflammatory and community-based services.
We are part of the Barts Health Group, one of the largest NHS Trusts in the country with over 7,000 staff employed at the Royal London and Mile End Hospitals alone. As well as deputising as CEO, you will be leading the delivery of our transformation, informatics and specialised strategies for our Group and at our hospitals, working with your Executive team colleagues to drive the priorities and at North East London's major hospital.
Main duties of the job
We need a deputy Chief Executive committed to inclusive and progressive leadership, intent on driving collaboration within a still-forming ICB. Someone for whom values matter, and shape their leadership style. We need a Director of Transformation who will thrive in a fast-paced environment, responding creatively to financial, strategic, operational, quality and people challenges at system and place. Whilst you may not have worked in a Group model before, you will have some appreciation of both its benefits and complexities.
The role will oversee the design and implementation of system strategies for to-be-delegated specialised services, working with Barts and NEL acute and other provider collaboratives, steering service reconfiguration drawing on GIRFT and other benchmarking data. It will include acting on behalf of the RLHME to improve our informatics offer, driving RLHME within the Barts Group to more mature data-driven clinical pathways, able to understand and respond to clinical and other variation. And you will support our PMO with our COO and head of Finance, with shared oversight of transformation projects that deliver our cost-improvement programme.
About us

Our vision is to be a high-performing group of NHS hospitals, renowned for excellence and innovation, and providing safe and compassionate care to our patients in east London and beyond. That means being a provider of excellent patient safety, known for delivering consistently high standards of harm-free care and always caring for patients in the right place at the right time. We strive to live by our WeCare values and are committed to promoting inclusion, where every staff member has a sense of belonging. We value our differences and fully advocate, cultivate and support an inclusive working environment.
We particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian and minority ethnic candidates as they are underrepresented within Barts Health at this band.
