Main duties of the job

The fixed term post will support the work of Barts Health Foot & Ankle Unit. The successful candidate is expected to have experience in managing routine elective foot and ankle surgery as well as foot and ankle trauma and complex, post-traumatic reconstruction. Our foot and ankle unit works cohesively with our limb reconstruction colleagues and has a regular MDT. The new consultant will be expected to help integrate foot and ankle services across all hospital sites, and lead multi-specialty service development. A background in research and outcomes publication is essential.

On-call commitments are based at either the Royal London or Whipps Cross Hospital and therefore, generic orthopaedic trauma skills are a pre-requisite. Flexibility with cross-site working is expected.

You must hold full registration with the General Medical Council with a current license to practice and be on the Specialist Registrar or within 3 months of obtaining a CCT. General Duties

1. Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care

2. Leadership, development and organisation on the services in his/her charge in line with the Trusts business plans. Liaison and communication with the lead clinician, General Manager, Service Manager, Clinical Leads and Directors for Orthopaedic Surgery across the Trust, and the Surgery Board Chair.

3. A major contribution to the departments on-going efforts to improve efficiency in both the delivery and the management of patient care including the 18-week referral to treatment standard, reducing length of stay, meeting BOAST guidelines and managing the ratio of new to follow up outpatient attendances in line with commissioner expectations.

4. With the agreement of the Clinical Lead and Clinical Network Director, development of his/her own interests and specialisms within the speciality, including active participation in research programmes.

5. Corporate and individual responsibility for the professional management of doctors in training including the approval and monitoring of on calls and locum appointments.

Professional duties and Responsibilities:

1. To contribute to the provision of a comprehensive and efficient elective orthopaedic and trauma service by providing cover to consultant colleagues when leave is taken.

2. To provide evidence-based care for all inpatients and outpatients

3. To have regard at all times to all relevant clinical and quality standards including those set out in the Patients Charter, the 18 week waiting time standard and any local relevant agreements with commissioners.

4. To participate fully in the management of the department and to liaise closely with the Clinical Leads and Directors across the Trust.

5. The post holder may be required to carry out other duties in emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

6. The duties outlined are not definite and may be changed in accordance with needs of the service requiring the post holder to be cooperative and flexible.
