Job summary

Inpatient Diabetes Specialist Nurse (Band 7 -37.5 hours per week).

Applications are invited for the above post, to join the expanding and award-winning diabetes team at Newham University Hospital. You will be working within an enthusiastic team of diabetes nurse specialists and other health care professionals, providing clinical / education support for patients with type 1 and type 2 patients and their carers.

You will need to have good time management, organisational and communicational skills and should be able to manage a clinical caseload and work independently. You will be expected to keep up to date with the ever-changing technology within this field. We offer education/support to help with personal development.

Bart's Health is a major teaching centre, with medical students from Queen Mary University of London, and nursing students from City and Greenwich University.

Main duties of the job

  • Autonomously undertake comprehensive assessment of patient's needs using analytical/judgmental skills to understand complex information that aid diagnosis, formulate and recommend evidence based treatment/management plan after range of options and the implications of each of these, have been considered
  • Initiate medication prescribing, administration and management plan
  • The post holder will be responsible for providing advice, support and guidance to Trust staff for the optimum diabetic control of inpatients. The post holder will review and update local standards and practices to ensure that professional and clinical standards are maintained. In collaboration with the Nurse Consultant, the post-holder will ensure implementation of high adherence to the agreed professional standards.
  • You will demonstrate specialist skills enabling you to provide management plans, treatment advice, and support for adults with diabetes and their carers. You will be a clinical and educational resource for patients and health professionals. You will ensure a smooth transition from primary to secondary care occurs in terms of diabetes care.
  • You will be a good team player always striving to improve the care of people with diabetes.
  • The post holder will devise, initiate and further develop educational programmes for all grades of staff in all areas of diabetes management.

  • Responsible for providing a diagnosis for a patient condition using advanced critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills, including instigating appropriate clinical investigations and interpreting results to enable the development of an enhanced care package/immediate management plan which will meet the physical and psychological needs of the patient
  • Responsible for providing clinical and professional leadership in running of the service and influencing the future service delivery and nursing strategy, accountable for the delivery and standards of care provided to patient and ensuring safe effective person-centered care
