Job summary

One 6-month appointment available to start in May 2023. Suitable for middle grade doctors who have completed their membership exams or equivalent: MRCPCH or Primary FRCA, or EPIC Diploma. Covering a 10 bedded paediatric Critical Care Unit.

Main duties of the job

Barts Health (Royal London, Newham & Whipps) Teaching Hospital is one of the largest acute paediatric service providers in South East England and the largest Paediatric Trauma service in London. It has over 110 Paediatric surgical and medical beds; a day-case ward; a tertiary Regional Neonatal Unit with neonatal surgery and a Regional Neonatal Transport Service. It is the tertiary referral centre for Paediatric medical specialities (endocrinology, gastroenterology, haematology, oncology, and respiratory medicine) and surgical specialities including ENT.

Job responsibilities

PICU Information:

The unit is a purpose-built environment, commissioned for 10 PICU beds which opened in February 2012. It is a closed unit with dedicated PICU consultants, Lead Nurse, nursing team, pharmacist, and therapists.

Activity / Workload:

35,000 attendances/year present through a dedicated Paediatric A&E department and outpatient tertiary services. This unit treats a high volume of critically ill children who both present at A+E and via the in-patient wards as well as children who are referred from external hospital via CATS or STRS. The service treats approximately 425 patients a year.

Responsibilities and Clinical Training:

AM combined anaesthetic/medical ward round

PM Evening hand-over round

Day to day care of PICU patients, Including CPAP (EME and Hood), BiPAP and Ventilated patients (HFOV and Nitric)

Assessment of children on A&E and paediatric wards prior to transfer to unit

Liaison between teams and agencies involved with individual patients

Other training available:

Attend (inbuilt in rota) anaesthetic lists in Theatres for airway management training

Opportunities to learn and teach in the Simulator centre and weekly PCCU sim sessions

Attend regular Teaching sessions/M&M/Audit and research meetings in Paediatrics.

APLS and PLS courses are run within the Trust

Opportunity to have sessions on NICU and adult ITU and attend tertiary speciality clinics.

Non-Clinical Training and Responsibilities:

Monthly Childrens Services Directorate half day Audit incorporating clinical governance.
