Job summary

Senior Clinical Fellow in Cardiothoracic Critical Care with a special interest in extracorporeal life support (ECLS).

We are recruiting a Senior Clinical Fellow (ST5+ equivalent) in Critical Care Medicine.

Gain experience in both cardiac and general intensive care working in one of our four critical care units. The clinical work is alternated with special clinical interest (in this case, ECLS - at least one day per week dedicated to ECLS) and audit activity.

This post is a unique opportunity to be a part of the UK's premier cardiac centre - Barts Heart Centre. The Barts Heart Centre (BHC) is a venture formed by merging cardiothoracic services from the London Chest Hospital, St Bartholomew's Hospital and the Heart Hospital. This merger created the UK's largest cardiothoracic centre with nearly all specialist cardiac services for north central and north east London and beyond, as well as highly specialised national services, brought together in the newly built hospital on the St Bartholomew's site.

With state-of-the-art facilities, Barts Heart Centre has 72 critical care beds, ten theatres, ten catheter labs and over 250 cardiac, vascular and thoracic beds, creating one of Europe's largest Cardiothoracic Centres.

Main duties of the job

The ECLS Fellow will be expected to contribute to designing and delivering the ECLS teaching program for nursing and junior medical staff. In addition, they will be involved in the governance of the ECLS program.

The fellow will have the opportunity to be a part of a highly functioning Critical Care team with vast experience in this field. The fellow will be encouraged to rotate through the cardiothoracic ICU to gain expertise in managing immediate post-operative patients. They will be exposed to various cardiac-output monitoring devices, including pulmonary artery catheters, PiCCO2, oesophageal doppler and transoesophageal echocardiography. The fellow will have the opportunity to be a part of the ECLS retrieval team and gain valuable experience in cannulation techniques for respiratory and cardiac support.

The fellow will be encouraged to attend the unit's educational programme, including weekly ICU teaching and regular ECLS courses. They will be encouraged to participate in relevant national meetings during the fellowship.
