Job summary

Barts Health NHS Trust are seeking to appoint a clinical fellow post in Plastic Surgery, based at the Royal London Hospital; we have posts starting in August and October 2024.

This is fantastic opportunity to be involved in one of the busiest major trauma centres in the country and the largest trust in England. The post will be for a 6- or 12-month fellowship within the Plastic Surgery Department for a Post-CCT Senior Clinical Fellow with a special interest in Trauma, Lower Limb, Head & Neck, Breast Reconstructive Microvascular Surgery.

The successful candidates will join a team involved in a broad spectrum of Plastic Surgery. A large emergency workload of upper and lower limb trauma comes from the helicopter serving this Level I Trauma Centre. Elective surgery in the department includes hand, head and neck, breast and surgical oncology reconstructions, together with a commitment to skin malignancy and paediatric plastic surgery.

You will join a team of 15 consultants, 15 SPR level doctors and 8 SHO's. The successful candidate is expected to have experience of managing common plastic surgical emergencies, particularly upper and lower limb trauma.

Main duties of the job

The Royal London in Whitechapel is a major teaching hospital providing local and specialist services in state-of-the-art facilities. The London Hospital was granted Royal title by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1990 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of its opening on the Whitechapel site, allowing it to be known as The Royal London Hospital. The Royal London Hospital is the UK's largest trauma centre and leads the trauma network for Northeast London and Essex. The hospital was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 2013. It is 17 storey, 727 bed hospital with a helipad for London's Air Ambulance and 44 bed adult critical care unit is a leading specialist centre with an international reputation for caring for critically injured trauma patients across London. In addition, the Royal London is home to London's busiest paediatric A&E department and one of the largest children's hospitals in the UK. The contemporary buildings reflect the innovation inside and the staff are, quite rightly, extremely proud to work in such an exciting and dynamic environment.

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • ATLS
  • Maintain Full registration with the GMC, with a licence to practice
  • FRCSPlas/Within 1 year of CCT

Desirable

  • Post CCT Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MS)

Training & Experience

Essential

  • Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent)
  • Minimum of 7 years postgraduate plastic surgery experience at registrar level equivalent to UK standards
  • Training in diagnosis and treatment of complex reconstruction conditions
  • Training in microsurgery to the level of independent operating
