Job summary

We are currently seeking a forward thinking, dynamic, motivated individual to work within Barts Health Trust based in the Cardiac Department at St Bartholomew's Hospital. The successful candidate will contribute to service provision with invasive and non-invasive cardiac investigations. There may be some cross-site cover at other hospitals in the trust.

Applicants would ideally be competent in non-invasive cardiac procedures including ECGs, Holter and ambulatory BP monitor fitting, Holter analysis, assisting in exercise testing and CPEX, with some knowledge of invasive cardiology/pacing/echocardiography. We have a supportive environment for training and development. You will be expected to demonstrate maturity and experience consistent with this grade and position, however, further training will be provided if necessary.

Main duties of the job

An experienced Cardiac Physiologist/Scientist is required to work competently with a multi-disciplinary team in the Cardiology Department, Barts Heart Centre. The post holder will be required to perform foundation level tasks unsupervised and to assist senior staff as required. The post holder must be able participate in non-invasive clinical procedures competently. In addition the post holder will be required to supervise, train, guide and support staff in the performance of their individual roles and to give support to senior staff members.

Job responsibilities

Clinical:

  • To be proficient and participate in all non-invasive cardiology procedures. Tests and procedures include:
    • ECGs.
    • Holter monitors (24/48/72-hour and 7-days) and event recorder fitting and analysis.
    • Blood pressure monitors.
    • Physiologist-led Exercise Testing and interpreting/CPEX/Tilt Testing
    • To be a key member of the Immediate Life Support team in all Cardiology clinical areas according to Trust Guidelines.
  • Knowledge of echocardiography OR device follow up and/or implant OR interventional cardiology is desirable but not essential.

Other responsibilities:

  • To take responsibility for self-development on a continual basis, undertaking on-the-job and other training as required, and to participate in the departmental appraisal system.
  • To be actively committed to internal and cross-site rotation allowing development of new skills and up-dating existing skills.
  • To assist in supervision of cardiographers and being involved in the continuing development of an in-house training program.
  • Assist in the promotion and development of new ideas and encourage other staff to do likewise.
  • Active involvement in monitoring the quality of the service provided. Ensuring all staff are aware of policies and procedures and are working within them and to develop and review policies and procedures annually.
  • Complete all necessary documentation and records for all patients undergoing any investigation.
  • To develop professional and IT skills as demanded by the needs of the department, including using the hospital patient records databases CRS, PATS, DMS along with presentation programmes.
  • To report equipment and environmental problems according to departmental protocols, and to initiate Works Department, Domestic Services etc as required.
  • To attend and actively participate in departmental meetings in conjunction with senior colleagues to contribute a proactive approach to issues relating to quality of care, technical standards and efficiency improvements, as applied to own area of work and that of junior colleagues.
  • To assist senior staff as and when required.
  • To assist in the maintenance of daily stock levels, departmental administration and responding to patient queries.
  • To participate in research studies, and work alongside industry with new products.
  • To participate in audits and quality initiatives as appropriate, and assist in collecting departmental statistics.
