One locum post has become available within the department of Perioperative medicine.
This locum Consultant Anaesthetist post will be on a fixed term contract for 12 months. This post will be based at Whipps Cross University Hospital.
This is an excellent opportunity for dynamic individuals with the appropriate skills to join a first-class multi-disciplinary team providing the full range of services to the majority of East London and beyond in a progressive London teaching hospital environment.
The post holder will be an employee of Barts Health and there may be future opportunities or requirements to work at one of the other hospitals in the Barts Health group.

Main duties of the job
The Anaesthetic department offers a wide range of services: elective and emergency operating in obstetrics, high risk antenatal anaesthetic clinic, orthopaedics, general surgery, colorectal surgery, gynaecology, maxillo-facial and dental surgery, ENT surgery, urology and ophthalmology, as well as expertise in acute and chronic pain management, and regional anaesthesia. We also provide preoperative assessment and perioperative care sessions, CPET, high dependency and intensive care for adults.
The hospital has fifteen operating theatres, including two laminar flow orthopaedic theatres, specialist Ophthalmic and ENT theatres, and two theatres in the maternity unit.
Critical Care comprises a 9 bedded Critical Care Unit which is currently being refurbished and an 8 bedded unit that opened in January 2017 following a £2.3 million pound refurbishment. There are around 800-900 admissions per year.
Whipps Cross has a long history of provision of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. London Hyperbaric Medicine Ltd. was established in its current form in April 2001 as a Private Finance Initiative with the Trust. The facility is one of the busiest in the UK and has a state-of-the-art multi-place chamber.
There is monthly clinical governance, senior staff meetings and morbidity and mortality meetings. We have an active teaching program for trainees and allied health professionals which Consultants participate in.

The main clinical focus of the job plan is on theatre work. The department would expect consultants to work flexibly and there may be some flexible sessions included in the job plan. However, we will try to help consultants develop and maintain areas of clinical expertise with some regular clinical commitments.
The initial contract will be for 10-programmed activities (PAs) as described in the 2003 consultant contract. These activities will be split between direct clinical care (DCC) and supporting professional activities (SPA). The initial SPA allocation will be 1.5 (6 hours). The successful applicant may be required to participate in the general on-call rota which is 1:16 and non-resident or cover trauma lists at weekends.
For weekend daytime trauma lists one PA is accrued every week for the purposes of trauma. A day of trauma at the weekend is 3 PAs (a nine-hour session). The successful applicant would be job planned to do 42 weeks a year which equals 42 PAs of weekend trauma. Therefore, each year 14 days of weekend trauma would need to be completed. The days are chosen on a self-selecting rota.
