Job summary

Barts Heart Centre are looking for an experienced Advanced Surgical Care Practitioner (ASCP) to join our cardiothoracic surgical team. This is an exciting opportunity, for those with experience as a qualified surgical care practitioner to develop your career with us. You will join our existing team of Band 8a surgical care practitioners and have an opportunity to contribute the growth and development of our service.

As a senior member of the team it is important you are dynamic and flexible, a role model and an inspiration to others. The role includes teaching and mentoring trainee surgical care practitioners and other professionals.

The SCP role is integral within our cardiac surgical service and the team contribute to patient care within theatres and beyond. We provide Endoscopic Vein Harvesting to majority of our patients and Endoscopic Radial Harvesting to patients who meet the criteria, first assist in cardiac cases, including Minimally invasive surgery. The SCP team lead on post-operative care for patients who are experiencing wound complications through our SCP led outpatient's clinic. Follow up is provided with close multi professional working alongside cardiothoracic and Plastic surgery colleagues.

Main duties of the job

Work at an advanced level and be able to practice both autonomously and within a multidisciplinary team. Be self-directed to ensure the provision of enhanced continuity and high standards of care to patients requiring cardiothoracic surgery.

Perform surgical procedures including highly specialised vein harvest techniques.

Act as first-assistant for surgical operations including CABG, valve surgery and assisting with other aortovascular complex surgeries.

Apply specialist and advanced knowledge to independently manage a post-operative wound clinic and act autonomously to assess, diagnose, form clinical decisions and complex management plans related to wound issues

Contribute and lead on audits, research and quality improvement projects as per the latest SCP curriculum.
