Job summary

The Women's and Children's Division is seeking a new General Manager to oversee the day to day management and operational delivery of their high quality, patient focused services whilst driving forward an exciting service improvement agenda.

The General Manager is a key position within the Division's leadership team, being responsible for the operational and performance management of Maternity, Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Neonatology and Breast Services delivered at the Whipps Cross Hospital site. Further to this, the post holder will play a key role in the delivery of the NHS constitutional standards, the cancer and elective recovery programme and take the lead on service improvements to benefit our patients and staff.

The role offers excellent scope for professional growth and development, with real autonomy and responsibility coupled with the support of an experienced, innovative and enthusiastic clinical and managerial leadership team.

This is an exciting time to join the team at Whipps Cross Hospital.The post-holder will have the opportunity, alongside wider divisional stakeholders to play an important role in the planning and operationalising of the new Whipps Cross Hospital. Subject to business case and planning approvals we continue to anticipate the completion of the new hospital by the end of 2026.

Main duties of the job

  • Be responsible for the operational delivery of Maternity, Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Neonatology and Breast Services delivered at the Whipps Cross Hospital and ensure the safe and effective use of all resources
  • Take the lead in achieving key performance targets in line with local and national agreements including constitutional standards, cancer and elective recovery, outpatient transformation and the delivery of Trust strategies
  • In partnership with the service leads, take operational management responsibility for the delivery of service development and quality improvement projects, striving for high levels of patient and staff satisfaction across the Division.
  • Provide a clear sense of purpose and leadership by being visible and accessible to staff, patients, and the public.
  • Work with the Divisional leadership team to design and embed a staff engagement and wellbeing strategy, incorporating the feedback from the annual staff survey and other surveys as they are undertaken
  • Be the champion for administrative and operational staff, ensuring that their voices are heard, and their personal development needs are understood and acted upon
  • Role model positive leadership behaviours by living the Trust's values and visibly leading on promoting equality, diversity and include inclusion in all aspects of the job role
  • Deputise for the Divisional Manager as required
  • Participate in the hospital's senior manager on-call rota.

  • Significant management experience in a senior role within the acute sector in particular operational management.
  • Proven record of financial management at senior level, delivering on complex and large budgets including reducing costs, monitoring and corrective action.
