Job summary

Associate Director of Midwifery -Band 8D

Due to promotion of the current post holder, we are looking for an experienced head of midwifery to lead the midwifery and nursing workforce at the Newham University Hospital (NUH) site.

This is an exciting opportunity to join an innovative and forward thinking team. We are the largest maternity service in the Barts Health Group and have an innovative, passionate team committed to providing excellent maternity care for the women, and families, of East London.

The maternity unit at NUH comprises of a 16 bedded labour ward, a 61 bedded maternity ward, stand-alone maternity day assessment unit and triage, fetal medicine unit, alongside and stand-alone midwife-led birth centre, antenatal clinic and booking centre. We are proud of our maternity service and are on an exciting maternity improvement journey.

This is a full time post, with on call commitments and some weekend working.

Main duties of the job

We have a large community workforce consisting of 6 midwifery teams providing care to families in Newham. As part of the National Maternity Review, we have a caseloading midwifery team for the Newham site and our second caseloading team will be operational within the next few months. We are funded for a midwife to birth ratio of 1:25 and have very minimal vacancies.

You will need to possess significant midwifery experience, strong leadership skills and excellent communication and networking skills. You will be self-motivated, enthusiastic and have a passion for continuous development and improvement of maternity services, collaborative working, and maternity staff development.

You will be supported within your role by the senior leadership team and personal and professional growth is encouraged. We are part of the East London Local Maternity System (LMS) and as a maternity service have excellent representation on all the workstreams. You will be encouraged and supported to participate in the LMS which is a fantastic opportunity for development.
