Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic clinical fellow with demonstrable interest in geriatrics to join the Older People Services (OPS) department at the Royal London hospital at St1/2 level. The successful applicant will work predominantly withing ward based teams and under the supervision of OPS consultants. There will also be an opportunity to work across our other areas, such as Frailty and Trauma Peri operative older people services(TPOPS).

Main duties of the job

This is 6-month opportunity to gain experience throughout Older People Services department in general geriatrics, outpatient work and acute frailty and TPOPS if desired. Responsibilities would general ward work as well as participating in the local education programme and teaching medical students.

It would be recommended to participate/lead on a quality improvement project to or to contribute to the development of a clinical guideline.

The post includes weekend working covering OPS wards on a rota working pattern with no overnight cover.

Job responsibilities

The post would be suitable for experienced core medical trainees who have completed Foundation and Core Medical competencies (or equivalent), and wish to gain a period of focused experience and training in geriatric medicine whilst pursuing ST3 training. The post is suitable for candidates who are attempting the second parts of the MRCP (see section 3 below).The post holder would work days in an acute elderly care ward in a team of 2 F1s and either a IMT2, CT1 or F2: CT2 level member of the Acute Care of the Elderly team seeing patients admitted to the ward Leading the team of junior staff to ensure high quality patient care. Joining Consultant ward rounds, MDT meetings and board rounds.The Older People Services wards (52 beds) are based in the new Royal London Hospital and work closely with the emergency department and acute admissions unit. There are on call duties 1 in 5 weekends. The post gives experience of acute geriatrics including time on the Acute Admissions Unit, liaison work and sessions in our developing clinic/older persons assessment unit.
