Job summary
We have a great opportunity for a Band 7 Targeted Lung Health Check Specialist Nurse to join our Cancer Team at Barts Health NHS Trust, with responsibilities across the Northeast London Cancer Alliance.
We are looking for a confident and dynamic nurse with excellent up to date specialist respiratory and cancer knowledge, and advanced clinical skills, who has a key interest in lung cancer, quality improvement and service developments.
The TLHC specialist nurse will work alongside the rest of the TLHC team. The main element of their role is to deal with the scan results, under the supervision of the TLHC Clinical Director. This will include phoning patients who have a scan suspicious for lung cancer, as well as contacting patients with other incidental findings on their scans. All patients who are scanned receive a results letter; this is partly automated, but the nurse will be responsible for generating the majority of these, ensuring that anything mentioned by the patient at their review is addressed, and that all results are explained in an appropriate manner.
Primarily based at Mile End Hospital some cross site working is anticipated at the other hospital sites within North East London. Flexibility is possible, with the possibility of some home working. A full time position is available, but part time / secondment options are possible. Please contact us to discuss further.

The purpose of the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) role is to process results of the Targeted Lung Health Check Programme as they are received, under the supervision of the TLHC Clinical Director.

- To provide triage assessment nurse led clinics and provide specialist nursing advice by for patients who have a scan suspicious for lung cancer, as well as contacting patients with other incidental findings on their scans.
- To be the link between the screening programme and the clinical teams, until the patient is incorporated into the clinical service. Primarily for patients with an abnormal CT chest result but also for other indiential findings under agreed protocol.
- To co-ordinate onward referral for patients as appropriate onto a cancer pathway or other sepcificialist service if required.
- To attend the weekly TLHC MDT screening review meeting, present and discuss abnormal results. To take responsibility for ensuring all agreed actions are completed.
- Ensure results letters for patients are generated and provide sufficient information regarding all issues raised during their review.
- To maintain up to date specialist oncology knowledge and advanced clinical skills.
- To be able to provide health promotion and smoking cessation advice.
- To support teaching health education.
- To support service development, patient experience, staff engagement and attendance at meetings are also essential components of the job.
- Maintain a key interest in the quality improvement and service development of lung cancer pathways.
- Provide specialist knowledge, expertise and skills to patients following an abnormal result from a Targeted Lung Health Check.
- To maintain advanced communication . To be able to respond to clinical queries from TLHC participants (via email or telephone). Support patients and their families throughout their diagnostic / treatment / follow up journey and support the care pathway.
- To work autonomously within the scope of the role, as well as part of a multi-disciplinary team. To have a working knowledge of the lone working policy as appropriate.
- To be able to formulate individualised care pathways with the patient and the carer.
- To possess a working knowledge of respiratory equipment, for example inhalers, and spirometry (spirometry may be involved in the TLHC programme in the future if so, full training will be given).
- To exercise professional accountability and responsibility in changing environments across professional boundaries
- To act as a role model to other staff and upload the Barts Health NHS Trust values, with support from the Trusts Performance and Talent Review system.
- To identify personal and professional educational/ development needs
- Play a proactive role in producing accurate and complete records of activities and communications consistent with legislation, policies and procedures
