Job summary

The Trust includes St Bartholomew's Hospital, The Royal London Hospital, Newham University Hospital , Whipps Cross University Hospital and Mile End Hospital. A brand new hospital is being developed at the Whipps Cross site with Government investment, offering new and exciting opportunities for service development and delivery. We provide radiation safety support for all uses of ionising radiation in the Trust. The Barts and the Royal London sites have been built and equipped under a PFI and have a wide range of digital imaging equipment. The Barts Heart Centre, a new state of the art cardiac facility, has 10 cardiac angiography labs and 1 interventional theatre, with space for a further theatre. We also provide services to a specialist paediatric hospital and to other external clients

Main duties of the job

This permanent post is part of expanding the team to provide closer MPE / RPA working with the clinical departments and being more integrated into the clinical teams

You must be registered with the HCPC as a Clinical Scientist 0r close to achieving registration

The Radiation Safety Section is based at the Royal London Hospital. You will be expected to work on all Trust and client sites.

  • oMSc in Radiation Physics or equivalent experience.
  • oNHS STP training in medical physics or equivalent experience
  • oRegistered Clinical Scientist, or expectation to achieve registration within 1 year

  • Relevant experience in radiation safety applied to use of ionising radiation in medicine and of diagnostic radiology physics
  • oAble to performance test a wide range of diagnostic x-ray imaging equipment - simple to mid-range systems on own, more complex systems with supervision
  • oProficient in Excel, Word, Access: able to set up databases and spreadsheets and extract information.
  • oUnderstanding of patient and staff risks arising from radiation exposure and of the image quality requirements for a range of diagnostic imaging procedures Able to produce written reports within a defined timescale.

Knowledge

Essential

  • oSpecialist knowledge in radiation and imaging physics as applied in medicine
  • oSpecialist knowledge of the techniques employed to measure the performance and radiological safety of a range of X-ray imaging equipment.
  • oKnowledge of radiation protection legislation in healthcare and biomedical research

  • oAwareness of national standards, professional and other guidelines relevant to the specialist area
