Adult Cardiac Intensive Care Unit
St Bartholomew Hospital intensive care unit is relaunching its newly qualified/registered nurse's induction programme. If you are a Student Nurse qualifying this year 2023 and would like to get your career off to the best start in a supportive, high-performing, and friendly unit this is your chance. We are offering a 10-week supernumerary deployment programme which will be run by our experience nurse educators alongside a dynamic nursing team.
Main duties of the job
Our programme consists of:
- 10-week supernumerary orientation programme. Which consist of supervised clinical working with your mentor, classroom teaching and skills workshop.
- You will be allocated to a team lead by a band 7 team leader. Your team leader will be responsible for your individualised professional development.
- You will be allocated a mentor and co mentor normally seniors within your team.
- Automatic attendance to the introduction to the intensive care course
- Access to bespoke preceptorship study days.
- Further opportunities to develop along our band 5 experienced nurse development pathways.

- You will have the opportunity to rotate through our three intensive care units:
ACCU 1C- specialises in nurse led and fast track recovery for elective and emergency cardiac surgery patients undergoing CABG, valve replacement, dissection repair and grown-up congenital heart (GUCH) patients. ACCU on 1C is busy, challenging, and requires nurses that enjoy working in a fast paced and exciting environment. The unit also supports patients who require level 3 on-going critical care interventions in the post-op period.
ACCU 1E - specialises in complex aortic vascular surgery as well the recovery of complex and emergency cardiac surgery patients undergoing CABG, valve replacement, dissection repair and grown-up congenital heart (GUCH) patients.
ACCU 6A specialises in emergency cardiology patients admitted via our Heart Attack Centre, direct from the community via LAS. 6A is also our designated receiving are for patients requiring Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), Ventricular Assisted devices (VAD), and general oncology patients requiring level 3 support from Barts Cancer Centre. It goes without saying that no two days are the same on 6A, with opportunities for exposure to a wide and extensive caseload of ICU patients.
