Job summary
The Anti-Coagulation Service is currently seeking to recruit a Support Worker to work out of Whipps Cross Hospital to provide a home visit service to our patients. The successful applicant will join a multi-disciplinary team and play an active role in providing exceptional care to our patients.
The applicants must be committed to providing a patient centred service. Essential skills include venepuncture proficiency, a good level of accuracy, literacy, and communication. We also expect the applicant to be compassionate and caring. The applicant must be a good team player and have a keen eye for detail to ensure accurate labelling of samples for testing. You will need to have great communication skills, be well organised and demonstrate lots of common sense. You need to have the ability to remain calm and deal with a busy (but rewarding) workplace.You must be a motivated, able to perform high quality general Phlebotomy and work well within a team
The post holder will be collecting blood samples from patients in outpatient clinics and will carry domiciliary visits.
The applicants must have an interest in healthcare. Applicants must also have GCSE English and Mathematics or equivalent and intermediate IT skills. Applicants must have excellent communication skills and enjoy working as part of a busy team
Main duties of the job
To work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide health care, and support under the direction and supervision of registered practitioners to patients within the anticoagulant service, with a particular focus on supporting the patients in the community. This includes assisting in the delivery of interventions, treating and discharging patients and reporting all changes in patient status to senior staff. The role also involves providing administrative support to the anticoagulation team.
The role will be primarily based at Whipps Cross Hospital site but cross-site working at Barts Health within the anticoagulation and thrombosis network is required as part of the role

Job responsibilities
- To visit patients in the community who are unable to attend the hospital for routine INR testing and reporting these results back to the anticoagulation practitioners
- Clearly communicating INR results and transcribing the dosage instructions from the practitioners and ensuring patients or their carers understand these instructions
- To undertake non-complex clinical procedures under the guidance of senior team members e.g.: venepuncture, INR testing using Coag-check machine, medications, and other tasks according to training and competencies. To recognize their responsibility and accountability in accepting the delegated task.
- To manage the warfarin database, which includes tracking and registering all patients on warfarin treatment under our clinics.
- To help with booking patients via swiftqueue, in order to facilitate their clinic appointment and INR testing
- To escalate and report patient progress/ status on a shift by shift basis to senior team members
- Liaising with clients, colleagues, family and other professionals in ensuring integrated quality care is provided.
- To keep accurate, timely records according to Trust policy.
- To demonstrate flexibility and adaptability working across anticoagulant teams within Barts Health according to service needs.
- To commit to undertaking training and education to progress clinical skills as indicated by service development needs
- To respond effectively and actively to complaints and escalate appropriately following departmental policies.
