Main duties of the job

As a speech and language therapist working in mainstream schools you will support children and young people with varied speech, language and communication needs to reach their potential. You will have a small allocation of schools that you will visit weekly. You will provide specialist assessments, a range of specialist and targeted interventions, and offer training, support and advice to school staff and parents. You will support children with developmental language disorder, autism, speech disorders, complex needs, and other communication difficulties. You will provide a service that considers the needs of children and families from a range of ethnic, linguistic, and neurodiverse backgrounds. You will have access to regular support, clinical supervision and learning opportunities.

Job responsibilities

Clinical/Professional

  • Plan and organise assessment and therapy for children accepted on to the caseload
  • Provide support at specialist, targeted and universal levels, as appropriate
  • Discuss findings, progress and concerns with parents, teachers, and other professionals
  • Provide advice, support and training to parents, teachers, teaching assistants and other professionals
  • To prioritise the caseload within a particular school
  • To have an effective professional relationship with key professionals, this to include discussions around prioritisation, workload demands, and any other issues as required
  • To plan collaboratively with school staff
  • To use highly developed auditory skills (hearing precisely the way a child speaks and uses speech sounds) and perceptual skills (observing the childs whole communication behaviour, including non-verbal aspects) to provide assessment, diagnosis and treatment of children with communication needs.
  • To provide written information for parents, professionals and young people that is accessible, understood, and useful
  • To provide written information for Education, Health and Care Plans with guidance
  • To provide verbal information to parents and professionals in person or over the phone, which may include providing information when parents are upset, needing to use simple language, or using an interpreter.
  • To considers the needs of children and families from a range of ethnic, linguistic, socioeconomic, and neurodiverse backgrounds.
  • To demonstrate understanding of how assessments, approaches and therapy are influenced by the multicultural and multilingual backgrounds of those we work with
  • Conduct assessments and therapy supported by bilingual assistants and/or interpreters
  • Maintain up to date clinical skills and knowledge
  • Maintain up to date knowledge in areas such as safeguarding and SEN procedures
  • To reflect on own clinical practice and professional relationships, to discuss these areas during line management and clinical supervision in order to seek support and advice from senior colleagues
  • To use clinical outcome measures and evidence-based practice
  • Monitor effectiveness of programmes or targeted level support implemented by others (eg teaching assistants)

  • Assume responsibility for the safety and security of equipment and materials in the office base and while in the community

  • To develop and present training to other professionals and parents/carers
