We are looking for a locum consultant orthopaedic surgeon with a special interest upper limb and hand surgery for a 6month post. This is a cross-site post working across the three Barts Health sites that deliver orthopaedics with clinic at Barts Health Orthopaedic Centre (BHOC) in Newham, elective operating at BHOC and Royal London Hospital (RLH) in Whitechapel and trauma operating at RLH and Whipps Cross University Hospital (WXH). Flexibility with cross-site working is expected. You will be joining a department of 55 consultant orthopaedic surgeons.

You must hold full registration with the General Medical Council and preferably be on the Specialist Registrar or within 3 months of obtaining CCT.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to construct a personal development plan which will be reviewed on an annual basis. The development plan will take account of general and specialist requirements for professional development issued by the relevant colleges and the Trust, and the operational needs of the service. The post holder will be supported by appropriate study leave allocations, financial support and the Trusts' appraisal scheme for Consultant staff.

Extensive Research facilities exist at Barts Health NHS Trust and research will be actively encouraged and is strongly desired within the department and in conjunction with other departments of the hospital. A number of local and multi-centre research projects are running within the orthopaedic department at Barts Health. Furthermore, we have a dedicated academic orthopaedic unit headed by Prof Xavier Griffin and several of the consultants have a strong academic, as well as clinical background. The department positively encourages and supports peer review publications and conference presentations.

The post holder will be provided with mentoring from consultants within the department and the wider Trust. The Trust also runs a paired learning programme for new consultants and senior leaders

  1. Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care

  1. Leadership, development and organisation on the services in his/her charge in line with the Trusts business plans.   1. To have regard at all times to all relevant clinical and quality standards including those set out in the Patients Charter, the 18 week waiting time standard and any local relevant agreements with commissioners.

  1. To participate fully in the management of the department and to liaise closely with the Clinical Leads and Directors across the Trust.

  1. The post holder may be required to carry out other duties in emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
