Job summary

The Royal London Hospital Hyper Acute Stroke Unit provides world class care and cutting edge research and treatment in Thrombolysis and Thrombectomy and is England's number 1 stroke Thrombectomy centre. The Royal London Hospital Mechanical Thrombectomy service performs the highest number of procedures in England per year, also covering the largest area across North East London and south East England with excellent clinical outcomes. The Royal London Hospital is also one of Europe's largest major trauma centres, and is nationally and internationally recognised for its work in advancing trauma care.

Successful applicants to this exciting new role would join the dynamic Mechanical Thrombectomy team to support the coordination and effective delivery of the Mechanical Thrombectomy service at the Royal London Hospital. The post holder will be committed to assisting us in delivering safe and compassionate care to all our patients and also ensuring that all Stroke patients have access to excellent care which is evidenced based.

This is an exciting and rewarding role, which would be suitable for a candidate with Stroke Experience, an interest in quality improvement and clinical governance and a strong track record of working collaboratively to maintain and developsafe, effective and compassionate services. You will be working as part of a friendly and supportive team within Stroke Services and the Emergency Care & Trauma Division at the Royal London.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of this role is to support the coordination and effective delivery of the Mechanical Thrombectomy (MT) service at the Royal London Hospital.

The ideal candidate would be able to recognise the challenge faced by patients and their families following mechanical thrombectomy, guiding families through the recovery or repatriation process as well as act as an advocate for a complex and challenging patient group. The candidate would enhance the delivery of the service, acting as a resource for other members of staff across the hospital from a wide range of disciplines. Close liaison with theatres, interventional neuroradiology, A&E, ITU/HDU and the stroke ward is essential. As a constant member of the team, the Nurse Coordinator will be invaluable in liaising with staff, patients and relatives, providing support and promoting adherence to care pathways.

The role demands high level communication skills, as well as ability to deal with high levels of distress often displayed by patients and families. The candidate should be passionate in wanting to support a unique patient group.

In addition, the postholder will oversee effective data collection and recording and using data to support improvements to the patient pathway both internally and across the region.

Clinical Practice

  • To provide a specialist nursing service for patients who undergo mechanical thrombectomy at RLH
  • To provide expert nursing advice and support to patients, their families and other healthcare professionals across the MT pathway
  • Contribute towards a multi-professional and holistic approach in the management of patients within the MT Service
  • Respond to thrombectomy calls, reinforcing local guidelines and practice
  • Act as a patient advocate.
  • Communicate with patients post thrombectomy to undertake review of outcomes
  • Work with the ward manager to provide leadership to the MDT and identify innovations in practice
  • Encourage and advise the ward/unit staff to actively participate in the appropriate management of patients following thrombectomy, providing clinical education and training for new and existing staff.

  • To complete the quarterly MT metrics dashboard, submitted to the London-wide MT group
  • Producing an MT dashboard on a monthly basis
  • Undertaking data analysis and presenting results in a professional format using excel and other data analysis tools
  • Undertaking monthly Door to Groin audit
  • Reviewing the Refer-a-Patient system regularly to ensure accurate and complete data entry and contacting referrers for any missing information in a timely manner
  • Reviewing Stroke SSNAP (Stroke Sentinel National Audit Programme) data as a data source for audits and ensuring accurate SSNAP entry
  • Working with clinical staff on audits and quality improvement projects

Meetings and governance

  • Coordination of internal governance meetings including producing agendas/ minutes and presentation of metrics
  • Coordination of external governance meetings including liaison with external partners for submission of data, as well as producing agendas/ minutes and presentation of metrics
