Job summary

We are seeking to appoint to a post of consultant physician to the Department of Diabetes & Metabolism within the Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine, Gastroenterology and Diabetes Directorate, Division of Specialty Medicine, Barts Health NHS Trust which will be based at the Royal London Hospital (RLH), Mile End diabetes centre (MEH) and St Bartholomew's Hospital (SBH). The post will also have clinical sessions and commitment to General Internal Medicine (GIM) at RLH and deliver specialty clinical sessions and have lead roles specifically within Type 1 diabetes and Inpatient diabetes and aim for excellence in clinical standards as required by national audit and the Clinical Quality and Care measures.

The post holder will join the Diabetes & Metabolism team at RLH and join the current Consultant of the month rota (currently contributing 10 weeks of general medicine annually) and provide weekend on call cover for Diabetes & Metabolism and inpatients (1 in 8) as part of the commitment.

The appointee will work a 9 PA job plan with seven day working incorporated into the timetable. There may be opportunity to extend this to a 10PA job plan over time with predicted cross site working.

Main duties of the job

The job plan is anticipated to contain 9 Programmed Activities per week, approximately 6.75 PAs (direct clinical care) per week, and 2.25 PAs (supporting) when averaged through the year.

The post holder will contribute to the Type 1 diabetes service with dedicated lists within the MDT clinic at St Bartholomew's and Mile End Hospital. The post holder will also take a lead and develop sub-specialist services in eating disorders and gastroparesis.

The post holder will lead on further development of diabetes inpatient services at SBH and RLH. St Bartholomew's hospital is home to Barts Heart Centre and inpatient Cardiology, Respiratory and Oncology. There are twice weekly consultant inpatient ward rounds of diabetes patients run with an SpR and diabetes specialist nurses. The RLH runs a once a week MDT and a twice a week consultant led ward round. The post-holder will lead the RLH inpatient service and hold accountability as the named medical inpatient lead for the site. The postholder will work with the SBH inpatient lead in joint governance meetings.

The post holder will also contribute to the Diabetes Antenatal clinic as outlined in proposed timetable when off the wards.
