Job summary

Barts Health NHS Trust are seeking to appoint a clinical fellow post in Plastic Surgery, based at the Royal London Hospital; we have a post starting in August 2023, February 2024, August 2024 and February 2025. Please state on your application which start date you are applying for.

This is fantastic opportunity to be involved in one of the busiest major trauma centres in the country and the largest trust in England. The post will be for a 6 Month fellowship within the Plastic Surgery Department for a Post-CCT Senior Clinical Fellow with a special interest in Trauma, Lower Limb, Head & Neck, Breast Reconstructive Microvascular Surgery.

The successful candidates will join a team involved in a broad spectrum of Plastic Surgery. A large emergency workload of upper and lower limb trauma comes from the helicopter serving this Level I Trauma Centre. Elective surgery in the department includes hand, head and neck, breast and surgical oncology reconstructions, together with a commitment to skin malignancy and paediatric plastic surgery.

You will join a team of 15 consultants, 15 SPR level doctors and 8 SHO's. The successful candidate is expected to have experience of managing common plastic surgical emergencies, particularly upper and lower limb trauma.

Main duties of the job

The practitioner's hours of duty shall be the standard working week of 40 hours and in addition the postholder will be paid a supplement for out of hours duty. Your salary will be at the appropriate point on the Specialty Registrar scale, in keeping with your experience and your work intensity (MN37 and banding 1b). The post is subject to the Terms and Conditions of Service of Hospital Medical & Dental Staff (England & Wales), to the General Whitley Council Conditions of Service and to the National Health Service Pension Regulations.

Due to the nature of the work in this post, it is exempt from the provision of section 4 (2) of the Rehabilitation of offenders Act 1974, by virtue of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exemption Order 1975). Barts Health reserves the right to change the parameters of the standard working week, the number of hours additional duty you are required to undertake and the area in which you are required to undertake it, in the light of the requirements of the service.

Barts and The London NHS Trust will endeavour to give as much advance notice as possible of such change. In the event of a change in the number of additional duty hours you are required to undertake your pay will be adjusted appropriately.

You may be required to provide on-call cover and take for patients throughout Barts and The London NHS Trust, including cross district, inter-directorate, and Barts and The London NHS Trust reserves the right to change cover requirements in accordance with the needs of the service.

Barts and The London NHS Trust reserves the right to require you to be resident when on-call either occasionally or regularly.

The successful applicant will be required to provide documentary evidence of natural or acquired immunity to hepatitis B. Where this is not possible, the postholder will be required to demonstrate by recent (within the last year) evidence of serology showing the absence of hepatitis B surface antigen.
