Job summary

Are you looking for a challenge and an opportunity to build on your training and gain experience in the biggest NHS trust in London?

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Dietitian to join our innovative dietetic team at Barts Health NHS Trust.

This post is suitable for new graduate Dietitians, or Dietitians currently working at a band 5 level. The post will allow you to gain experience working in a busy inpatient setting, providing excellent dietetic care to patients as part of the Specialist Medicine caseload. The post will also allow you opportunity to experience more specialist areas of dietetics, including neurology, gastroenterology, surgery and infectious diseases, with support from Senior Dietitians. The post holder will work closely with multi-disciplinary teams, including other health professionals.

You will take an active part in training students and other staff. You will need to possess excellent communication and organisational skills. We are committed to work-based education and training to improve clinical skills and we actively encourage CPD and audit.

Main duties of the job

To work together with the dietetic team to provide an effective dietetic service to adult in-patients at The Royal London Hospital. To ensure that research and audit is undertaken on a regular basis to ensure practice is evidence based. This post will have a requirement to work on any adult ward and may be required to work at our other hospital sites: St Bartholomew's Hospital, Newham University Hospital, Whipps Cross Hospital

Job description

Job responsibilities

Professional / Clinical responsibilities:

  1. To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work including the management of patients in your care.

  1. To undertake a comprehensive assessment of patients including those with diverse or complex presentations/multi pathologies using advanced clinical reasoning skills particularly in specialist field as well as other specialities as designated by the manager. This may include the use of complex calculations and/or anthropometric/other equipment.

  1. Formulate and deliver an individual nutrition and dietetic treatment based on a sound knowledge of evidence based practice and treatment options using clinical assessment, reasoning skills and analysis of biochemical results. To be responsible for providing specialised advice to clients within particular specialities including nutritional assessment, dietary counselling, motivational interviewing, negotiating targets, developing care plans and communicating these with relevant health and other care agencies. This may be on a one to one basis or to groups, both in an in and out-patient setting.

  1. Assess patient understanding of treatment proposals, gain valid informed consent and have the capacity to work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment

  1. To attend and contribute to relevant departmental meetings and continued professional development meetings i.e. presenting at audit, journal club and clinical supervision

  1. Use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively with patients and carers where there may be barriers to communication. For example, patients may be dysphasic, depressed, deaf, blind, unable to accept diagnosis or whose first language is not English. This may include the use of an advocacy service

  1. To provide nutrition counselling, evaluate patient progress, reassess and alter intervention if required

  1. To manage patients with challenging behaviours by the application of appropriate management strategies such a cognitive behaviour therapy.

  1. To work at all times within the Professional code of conduct as stipulated by the Health Professions Council

Operational Delivery:

  1. To act as a resource point for advice/support for other Health Care Professionals including Hospital Clinicians, GPs, Health visitors, District Nurses and any other interested parties.

  1. To be responsible for planning and organising continuing care for patients, in the community. This may include the arranging of complex packages of care e.g. home enteral feeding. This will include liaising with community nursing, medical teams, patients and carers as well as companies and manufacturers

  1. To represent the dietetics department by attending relevant Multi-disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings and/or ward rounds as appropriate. This will be to ensure the delivery of a co-ordinated multidisciplinary service, and integrate nutrition and dietetic intervention into treatment programmes and service delivery.

  1. To engage in nutritional health promotion that includes planning, delivery and evaluation of work projects

  1. To be flexible in order to assist in covering the work of colleagues during leave.

Information management:

  1. To write reports reflecting specialist knowledge and to ensure copies are sent to all appropriate parties in line with the Trusts guidance on consent and confidentiality.

  1. To complete home enteral feeding discharge forms for those patients requiring enteral feeding at home and ensure that all relevant parties receive copies of the forms.

  1. To assist in the development of nutritional educations materials in collaboration with other dietitians which must be evidence based and take into account barriers to communication.

  1. Must possess good IT skills such as word, power point and excel

Project management:

To work as an active member of the Dietetic Department developing projects in line with the Department objectives and relevant strategic plans.

Education and Professional Development:

  1. To participate in relevant dietetic training supported by the senior specialist dietitians in the team e.g. local specialist competencies and protocols to enable the provision of a specialist service.

  1. To plan, organise and deliver education sessions covering dietetic advice or practice to professional and non-professional groups e.g. Medical, nursing, support staff, students, volunteers, patients and patients panel members.

  1. To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of research findings and new practices within nutrition and dietetics and apply this knowledge to improve practice. To monitor own and others quality of practice as appropriate.

  1. To undertake research and audit within the department as appropriate and present findings to dietetic and/or clinical teams

Service Development:

  1. To be responsible for identifying, commenting, proposing and implementing changes to policies and procedures in own area of work with senior support where appropriate.

  1. To carry out service improvements in own area of work using skills in training and policy/procedure development and implementation.

Risk and Governance Management:

  1. To manage clinical risk within own patient caseload.

  1. To be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive patient treatment records in line with professional and departmental standards of practice.
