Job summary

We are looking for dynamic Physician Associates (PAs) to join the Solid Oncology department in order to facilitate new models of clinical care and best practice to help meet the current and future needs of patients referred to St Bartholomew's Hospital and to complement the existing varied and specialist clinical roles. This is an exciting time to be working at Barts Health NHS Trust, the biggest NHS Trust in the UK, delivering specialist Cancer and Cardiac services from our state of the art site at St Bartholomew's, set in the City of London which is where the role will primarily be based.

Experienced and newly qualified PAs are encouraged to apply and it is not expected that the post holder will have experience of working in their clinical speciality before joining, however prior experience would be desirable. PAs will undergo a period of induction followed by structured training and clinical supervision prior to undertaking work under delegated autonomy. Our expectation is that all our PAs will become fully integrated into their clinical service and closely involved in all the activities of their department that may include out of hours' care. These posts are advertised on a 12-month fixed term basis in the first instance.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the job will consist of review of inpatients, outpatients, assessment of acute admissions where they will be required to examine patients, initiate and interpret investigations, recommend treatment, complete necessary documentation and perform clinical procedures as required. Other roles may be developed over time as the PAs more closely integrate into their Department with the possibility of rotating through different areas of the department and becoming trained in procedures and other clinical skills.

It is envisaged that the role would develop flexibly over time, in accordance with the need of the service and candidates' own interests. Successful candidates will be offered the opportunity to develop their clinical skills and knowledge with the support from a team of clinical and allied healthcare professionals, as well as an annual 50 hours of continuing professional development, required for maintaining PA professional practice and revalidation within the Faculty of Physician Associate at the RCP. There will be opportunities to contribute to audit, research and teaching within the Department. PAs will be line managed by an educationally accredited, designated Consultant and a nominated deputy, who will act as mentor with regards to career development and appraisal. All members of staff are expected to demonstrate our core Trust values.
