Job summary
The Department of Acute Medicine at the Royal London Hospital runs a seven day consultant led service for the local population of Tower Hamlets, one of the poorest boroughs in the country, and parts of the City of London. Due to our location and reputation, we also care for many patients from wider East London. Our department regularly sees patients with a rich mixture of uncommon and advanced pathologies alongside the more mundane. We have very good relationships with, and work closely with our colleagues in the Emergency Department, Specialist Medicine and Older Peoples' Services. The fact that all our consultants work part time in these specialties has helped us greatly to solidify these relationships.
The Acute Assessment Unit (AAU) is a 52-bedded ward where all patients seen on the medical take are admitted. There is provision to monitor acutely sick patients in a dedicated 8-bedded cardiac monitoring area and we have 16 side rooms. The medical ward team is divided into two consultant lead teams: The Post Take Team and The Early Team ('consultant of the week') and we enjoy a high nurse to patient ratio that has helped us to create a safe and effective care environment. AAU has an excellent Multi-Disciplinary Team that allows us to provide fast assessments of patients and planning for their care and appropriate, timely discharges. All documentation on AAU is electronic and to facilitate efficient ward rounds we have a large number of dedicated computers on wheels.
Main duties of the job
To provide consultant physician service to the medical take at the Royal London Hospital. The post will work as part of a rolling rota providing consultant cover to a number of acute medical services.
If the appointee specialises in Acute Medicine, the specialty sessions will be undertaken in ambulatory care or other acute medicine services. All speciality sessions will be agreed with the clinical director at the time of appointment.
